I hate to sound heartless, but this sounds like another contender for this year's Darwin Award:

Fairfield teen drowns at Lake Berryessa
, Reporter
A 17-year-old boy from Fairfield drowned Sunday afternoon at Lake Berryessa, marking the first drowning of the year at the popular recreation spot, according to the Napa County Sheriff's Office.
Emergency personnel responded to the lake around 4:25 p.m. after witnesses saw a teen boy slip beneath the water and fail to resurface, said Henry Wofford, spokesperson for the sheriff's office.
The teen was visiting the lake with two friends. Witnesses saw him standing in waist-deep water before he accidentally stepped off a steep underwater ledge, Wofford said.
First responders searched the water with an underwater camera and recovered his body at 4:54 p.m. near the shoreline in nine feet of water. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wofford said the boy did not know how to swim and was not wearing a life jacket.
The Napa County Sheriff-Coroner's Office did not immediately provide his name.
Wofford urged all visitors, even those who are confident swimmers, to wear life jackets while enjoying Lake Berryessa. The flotation devices are free to rent at the lake, he said.
A 17-year-old who doesn't know how to swim goes into Lake B. with two pals—who probably don't know how to swim either, since they couldn't rescue him. The kid's name is omitted but all bets are on his being a "diverse" male.
By the way, isn't learning to swim part of the physical education requirement in most high schools anymore?
