New York City’s Education Miracle! After Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina Ordered Teachers and Administrators to Virtually Further Gut Discipline, in Order to Radically Reduce Suspensions and Arrests, Suspensions and Arrests were Radically Reduced! Daily News Helps Farina by Silencing Critics on Comments Thread

“Students learn best when they are in a safe, respectful and supportive environment,” said Fariña. “We are carrying out our commitment to improving the school atmosphere for students in all five boroughs.”

This is the exact opposite of the truth. As per Farina’s orders, thugs are permitted to disrupt classes and defy teachers, including cursing them out, to their heart’s content, which means that less learning is going on than ever.

The Daily News used to be much more supportive of educational standards, but it’s veered way to the left since the 1990s, when I used to freelance for it.

And it squelched discussion on its comment thread. Below I copied and pasted every comment the Daily News’ thread Nazis permitted—three! They probably deleted or blocked 90% of the comments. I’d try and post something, but the thread Nazis permablocked me years ago. They won’t even let me vote up other reader’s comments!

That less offenses are reported or are acted upon does not necessarily signify progress. From the days of [Joel] Klein there has been considerable pressure brought to bear on teachers to underreport offenses and to not go outside the administration (for example, reporting crimes directly to the police). School administrations regularly suppressed reports in hopes of making their schools look better on the school's report card just as they instituted sham AP courses, puffed up school offerings and enabled higher grades and graduation rates . The Farina administration has seemingly done little to address this culture of "achievement". We need the DOE to be honest if we are to further actual education possible now especially since the Little Man [Bloomberg] is gone from office.

How sad is this headline....Arrests in school! Open reform schools!
I'm pretty sure the reason the arrests are down is because the kids don't go to school at all.

[Oh, now I get it—this story was just a big April Fool’s Day joke!]

City Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña, who has led efforts to reduce suspensions and arrests in city classrooms, praised the decline in arrests and suspensions in city schools.

Arrests and suspensions in city schools are becoming increasingly rare, according to statistics released by Education Department officials Tuesday.

Following a years-long trend toward fewer arrests and suspensions in the public schools, arrests for the first 110 days of the current school year are down 16% from the previous year and suspensions are down 10%.

City Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña, who has led efforts to reduce suspensions and arrests in city classrooms, praised the decline.
“Students learn best when they are in a safe, respectful and supportive environment,” said Fariña. “We are carrying out our commitment to improving the school atmosphere for students in all five boroughs.”

Figures released Tuesday show that city principals handed out 22,509 suspensions in the first 110 days of the 2014-2015 school year. That’s down from 25,385 in the 2013-2014 school year.

Fariña has introduced a number of policies to lower suspensions and 911 calls in city schools since taking office in January 2014, including changes to the discipline code and conflict resolution training for school staffers.

Likewise, school safety officers carried out 225 arrests and issued 362 summonses at city schools in the first 110 days of the current instructional year. That’s down from 267 arrests and 395 summonses for the previous year.

Arrest and suspension rates have fallen steadily in city schools since 2012, as educators and school officials have sought to maintain order through other means.

[Staffers have been getting that sort of nonsensical training for years.]

And that little Spanish squiggle above the letter in her last name. We must be so fastidious toward THEM.

Public schools have become money pits even as they deliver less and less. Metal detectors for high schools, who would have thought that would become a reality? Chicago's school chief is under a cloud at present for a no-bid contract that was given out. $20.5M was to be spent on "leadership services development" for school principals. It would be cheaper just to hand them some training manuals and books and tell them to study the materials. But no, they have to spend as much as possible. Also, people like her have expense accounts and are supplied cars as though they are indispensable, one-of-a-kind geniuses. Any number of people could do her job and do it for much less money. They have social promotion here so the high school graduation rate has gone up but at the same time it means less than what it previously did, which was not much.

take the Q22 bus in Rockaway between 7 and 9am to Beach 116th Street.

you will witness daily violence on the Q22 bus. the bus driver doesn't bother to call the police. the public schools have people who come on the bus to take the little thugs off the bus. They don't even write it up as an NYPD incident.

If a passenger gets harmed by one of these out of control little thugs. no one will assist them in any way.
