FORT WORTH -- A former Fort Worth police officer was sentenced Wednesday morning to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting five women whom he'd detained while on duty.

Daniel Lopez, 34, resigned from the department on Dec. 7, 2010, one day before his arrest on accusations that he'd forced a woman to give him oral sex after detaining her on Thanksgiving night.

Authorities later added four sexual assault charges against Lopez, who had been with the department since 2004, after the department's special investigation unit found additional victims.

Authorities have said that the assaults took place between August and November 2010.

Lopez was sentenced to 20 years in all five cases, but the sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will become eligible for parole after serving 10 years.

Once released from prison, Lopez will be required to register as a sex offender.

If he'd not been a cop, his sentences would have run consecutively.
