Beaumont, Texas: During a Riot, a Wedding Broke Out!

“Non-Crime” Helps Keep Police Stats Down: Shooting Vic Refuses to Press Charges
By Nicholas Stix

What kind of a victim of a shooting refuses to press charges?

From what I was able to gather, the 85-year-old Appomattox Club is a major institution in black Beaumont.

A brawl that erupted at a Beaumont wedding reception Saturday night led to a shooting and multiple arrests.

Police officers were called to the Appomattox Club about 9:38 p.m. to break up a physical fight involving 20-30 people, according to a Beaumont Police Department report.

When they arrived, they found a victim of a gunshot wound to the hand among the pandemonium, and quickly arrested the accused shooter.

Although the victim decided he didn't want to press charges, officers found that the shooting suspect was wanted on an outstanding warrant, so he went to jail anyway.

Others involved in the dispute were found to have warrants as well, and some were in possession of marijuana.

Five people, none of which were the bride or groom, went to jail in all. Several others reported minor injuries and police reports were still being taken.

Names of the suspects, who had not yet been formally charged, weren't released Sunday.
