Kathy Shaidle Solves “Mook” Mystery

By Nicholas Stix

I admit it. Growing up, I never heard anyone refer to anyone else as a “mook.” In fact, I don’t recall hearing it prior to Chicago actor Dennis Franz using it as a regular part of his vocabulary on NYPD Blue, beginning in the mid-1990s, as Det. Andy Sipowicz.

Apparently, it was coined as an insult in 1973. Kathy Shaidle has the goods.

Thanks, man! The Urban Dictionary is useless on that particular word.
