I admit it. Growing up, I never heard anyone refer to anyone else as a “mook.” In fact, I don’t recall hearing it prior to Chicago actor Dennis Franz using it as a regular part of his vocabulary on NYPD Blue, beginning in the mid-1990s, as Det. Andy Sipowicz.
Apparently, it was coined as an insult in 1973. Kathy Shaidle has the goods.
