Most likely would not have mattered had the FDNY reached him. For thoracic stab wounds what's needed is immediate emergency surgery to stop the bleeding. Maybe an ambulance can administer fluids to temporarily ward off circulatory collapse and shock. But if the wounds are serious enough, and it looks like they were in this case, the outcome is still virtually certain.
