Uppercasing ‘Black’

June 30, 2020

The Times will start using uppercase “Black” to describe people and cultures of African origin, both in the U.S. and elsewhere. Read more in this note from Dean Baquet and Phil Corbett.

Dear Colleagues,

At The Times and elsewhere, the nationwide protests over racism and police violence have prompted discussions about many aspects of our coverage. One element has been a renewed focus on a longstanding debate: whether to capitalize the term “Black.”

We have talked to more than 100 staff members to get their views, reviewed the arguments that have been made over many years, and consulted with colleagues at other news organizations. The feedback has been thoughtful and nuanced, with a wide range of opinions among colleagues of all backgrounds.

Based on those discussions, we’ve decided to adopt the change and start using uppercase “Black” to describe people and cultures of African origin, both in the United States and elsewhere. We believe this style best conveys elements of shared history and identity, and reflects our goal to be respectful of all the people and communities we cover.

The change will match what many readers are seeing elsewhere. The Associated Press and other major news organizations have recently adopted “Black,” which has long been favored by many African-American publications and other outlets. The new style is also consistent with our treatment of many other racial and ethnic terms: We recently decided to capitalize “Native” and “Indigenous,” while other ethnic terms like “Asian-American” and “Latino” have always been capitalized.

We will retain lowercase treatment for “white.” While there is an obvious question of parallelism, there has been no comparable movement toward widespread adoption of a new style for “white,” and there is less of a sense that “white” describes a shared culture and history. Moreover, hate groups and white supremacists have long favored the uppercase style, which in itself is reason to avoid it.

The term “brown” as a racial or ethnic description should also generally remain lowercase and should be used with care. “Brown” has been used to describe such a disparate range of people — Latin, Indigenous, Asian, Middle Eastern — that the meaning is often unclear to readers. A more specific description is generally best.

The change to “Black” is effective immediately; relevant stylebook entries will be revised in the coming days. Here are a few additional points to keep in mind:

  • Both “Black” and “white” should normally be used as adjectives, not nouns.
  • “African-American” remains an acceptable alternative for Black people in the United States; we should generally choose the term that the subject favors.
  • Under our longstanding guidelines, we should include references to a person’s race or ethnicity only when it is pertinent and the pertinence is clear to readers.
  • Take care to avoid implying that “white” is the default (for example, by noting the race of a Black person in a story but not specifying the race of others). And avoid implying that any racial or ethnic group is monolithic in its outlook or views.

Thanks to all the staff members who shared thoughtful, nuanced views on this complex subject, and to Mike Abrams, who helped guide our discussions and thinking.

Dean and Phil

Paul Joseph Robert's has it right:
Think about this on July 4th. White Americans have not only lost the independence they gained in 1776, they have lost the protection of law. White Americans are no longer “equal under the law.”

No white American can criticize a black or stand up to a black’s abuse of his/her person without the risk of job loss and prosecution by government authorities. White Americans pay for their servitude with subsidies to their oppressors, only it is a worse servitude in the 21st century than white Americans experiened under the British King in the 18th century.

No one speaks for white people. There are no white organizations attending to the rights of people who have white skin. (GRA;THAT'S been my overarching point for years.)
ONLY White People suffer racial discrimination. Whites are banned from “go-to-the-head-of-the-line” for university admissions, jobs, promotions. The Civil Rights Act does not protect white people. The only white people who get media support are the ones who denounce their fellow whites as racists. The white supremacy militias are more hype than real. Wherever white men appear armed, they always submit to the authorities sent to disarm and arrest them. They never fight.

After being subjected to decades of demonization, white people have lost their strength. They have become wet paper bags. Anyone can walk through them. And the neoconservatives think the US can go to war with real people like Russians, Chinese, North Koreans, Iranians. What a joke we are.

No strength remains, and people of color see it. Whites and their civilization are denounced in every White University. Indeed, the main function of white American universities is to demonize white civilization. Jean Raspail describes white self-destruction in The Camp of the Saints, and insouciant white Americans are today precisely as gullible and unaware as the French people in Raspail’s novel.

The vast majority of white people in America have no idea that government at the state, local, and federal level is engaged in demonizing and marginalizing them. There is no organization, no media to tell them.
If there were one, it would be closed down as racist, nazi, fascist, whatever word or term demonizes the most. It would not be permitted on Facebook, twitter, Google or anywhere else. Outspoken white people speak for blacks, not for whites. They are enraged against white people, not against blacks.

White people no longer have a voice unless it is raised in adoration of “People of Color.” Once the white liberals complete their debasement of themselves and the rest of us, their voice will no longer be needed. As they are themselves white, they are evil also, and will suffer the same fate as the rest of us.(GRA:I've said that as well.) All of their pandering to blacks will do them no more good than it did for the French panderers of the invading third world horde in Raspail’s novel.

When the seeds of hate are sowed, you reap the consequences.
GRA:There's more, but you get the gist. Now what do we do about it?Are we capable of doing anything, like organizing? That's really the solution--a massive signup campaign to save Whites(from themselves in some ways). The mindset must change first, but as Roberts and I say,the media has turned many Whites into guilt ridden, deflated balloons, incapable of rising up.I've seen it and constantly harped on that fact for years.Who will lead Whites out of this disaster--that's rapidly approaching-if it isn't already here(I think it is).

Gary B Pruitt is the CEO of the associated press--Jewish.
Brian Roberts is the CEO of comcast(owner of nbc)--Jewish
Mark Thompson CEO of the times--is Catholic, but married to a Jewish woman(pointed out in an article by Mick Hartley).
WTF is it with Jews--and the media which they oversee--and their assault on whites? Is it like Paul Joseph Roberts says--that they believe an alliance with blacks will "save" them from genocide?
Any logical person would see the insanity of that thought process.Explain it to me if you could.
