Poverty Awareness Month Alert

"W": I was completely unaware that this is Poverty Awareness Month. My focus, as always, is on Black History Awareness Month.

According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, 21% of children (that's 6.9 million!) live in poverty, resulting in hunger, lack of nutrition and a chance to live a normal childhood. And while it is important to focus on this issue every day, January is

Poverty Awareness Month. Now is the time to hone in on the issue and make a difference.

While many Americas would like to make a difference, it can be a challenge to know how to get involved. A story on organizations like

Moms Against Poverty can shed light on Poverty Awareness Month and encourage readers to get involved. MAP, which was launched in 2008 with the mission to break the cycle of poverty, uses its holistic and multifaceted approach to help make a difference. MAP's programs include Education, Hunger Relief and Orphan Care, all aimed at giving each child a chance to thrive in a healthy setting. Are you working on any stories for National Poverty Awareness Month? If so, I'd like to connect you with a MAP executive to learn more about the organize and provide commentary for a story.
