Trial Starts in Eve Carson Murder

Murder victim Eve Carson: Her killers blew her pretty, white face off

On Wednesday, the trial of Laurence Lovette Jr. for the March 5, 2008 murder of Eve Carson began. Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said in his opening statement that Eve Carson was conscious and aware after being shot four times by a .25 caliber pistol. Then came a blast from a sawed-off shotgun.

Woodall said Lovette and Demario Atwater kidnapped Carson and took her in her SUV to an ATM to withdraw $700, the daily limit. After her body was found, the two continued to use Carson's card at ATM's in Durham for days, withdrawing another $700.

Atwater pled guilty last year and was sentenced to two "life" prison terms. Lovette does not face the death penalty because he was a minor at the time.

"Jurors winced as they were shown crime-scene photos of Carson's bloody body, which was discovered by a Chapel Hill police officer who responded to a 911 call reporting the sound of gunshots and a woman's scream shortly after 5 a.m."

"Lovette's DNA was found on the inside door of Carson's Toyota, according to the prosecutor."

Lovette was seen on surveillance footage at an ATM using Carson's card.

N.S. In spite of Atwater's official sentence of two "life" prison terms, it is highly unlikely that he will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Lovette has also been charged with murdering Duke University graduate student Abhijit Mahato on January 18, 2008. If he is convicted of killing Carson, and gets sentenced to "life in prison without parole," he cannot get any more time for a conviction for killing Mahato.
