Morally, it’s irrelevant, and we’re not supposed to care anymore about the death of Jorelys Rivera than about any other murdered child, but then you look at that pretty little face mugging for the camera, and all those fine rules fly out the window.
With that said, the first thing that strikes me is the babysitter’s negligence. The point of being a babysitter is to supervise one’s charges at all times. What point is there in paying a babysitter to watch your child, if she’ll let the child go off on her own? Either she’s not necessary, or she’s incompetent.
To anyone who will complain, “The babysitter’s just a kid,” I say, if being a kid means she isn’t responsible, well, then, being a kid means … she isn’t responsible.
Young girls are overrated, when it comes to taking care of children. When our son was four or five months old, we visited The Boss’ family in Trinidad. At one point, The Boss asked one of our nieces, then 14, to watch our son, who was napping. The Boss expressly told her never to get up from the bed and leave him alone for any reason, including answering the phone.
The next time the phone rang, the niece jumped right off the bed, and ran to answer it. I happened to catch all this (I was probably going for the phone), and so I was able to go to the bedroom, and ensure that catastrophe didn’t strike.
The next time we needed someone to watch our son, and there were no adults handy, we asked the aforementioned niece’s brother, who was then 16. At some point my in-laws’ phone rang, as it constantly did in those days in which both were alive, and my late (widowed) brother-in-law Meno was also alive and living with them. I ran to answer the phone, and as I did, I noticed my nephew sitting on the bed, his back against the wall, one leg up, and the other stretched out, blocking our son’s path. My nephew didn’t even flinch at the telephone’s ringing.
Since the babysitter was the last person to see Jorelys alive, she and her friends and relatives will also have to be investigated, to ensure that this was not more than a case of deadly negligence.
Among the many things the story does not tell us, three things stand out: The mother’s immigration status, her name, and any mention of the child’s father. So, we’ve got a woman with three children, no name, no race or ethnicity, no history, no visible husband, and a murdered Hispanic daughter in an area that until a few years ago had few or no Hispanics that is now teeming with them.
Increasingly, diversitynik “reporters” are more notable for what they withhold than for what they tell. Thus are their stories incoherent jumbles of statements that force the reader to play guessing games, like a detective dealing with a hostile criminal suspect. They’re counter-journalists. Dorie Turner—remember that name.
P.S. Since the story below was published, police have made two statements which uneasily co-exist: 1. "This was a very calculated and planned crime," according to Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan; and 2. That “no charges” are planned against the babysitter. (Director Keenan also said that the child died of blunt trauma force to the head 60-90 minutes after she was last seen.)
How could someone have planned the crime, if the child’s returning home alone was a fluke? And “no charges” doesn’t mean the babysitter wasn’t implicated. Note too that the apartment complex was crawling with convicted sex criminals. The authorities say that none of them is a suspect, but that denial is also worthless, since they wouldn’t to give a suspect reason to flee, especially given that there is a solid chance that he is an “immigrant.”
The later story also reported that the victim’s unnamed mother was working the graveyard shift at a local poultry plant.

CANTON, Ga. — A body found in a trash container is believed to be that of a 7-year-old girl who went missing last week from an apartment complex playground north of Atlanta, authorities said Monday.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said that “everything points to it being” Jorelys Rivera of Canton. Bankhead said officials were awaiting results of an autopsy to confirm the identity and a cause of death.
Bankhead said the body appeared to have been severely beaten and sexually assaulted. He said the girl’s mother had been notified. No suspects were in custody as of Monday night. The girl’s mother returned to the apartment complex early Monday evening. Crying, the woman entered the family’s apartment and a family friend asked for privacy.
The child was last seen around 5 p.m. Friday at the River Ridge apartments in Canton, about 40 miles north of Atlanta, Canton police Detective Candy Worthy said. The girl was at the playground with a teenage baby sitter. The girl had gone back to her apartment to get sodas for friends when she disappeared, authorities said.
Authorities brought in a specialized team of law officers trained to handle child abductions. The body was located about 1 p.m. Monday.
Canton Emergency Management Director Jeff Hall said authorities had not searched the container until Monday because it was a large garbage compacting bin that needed to be moved off site so they could go through it. Bankhead, the GBI spokesman, said investigators think the girl was killed at the apartment complex and her body left in the trash bin. Authorities planned to provide an update on the investigation this morning.
Maria Rodriguez works with Rivera’s mother at a nearby poultry plant and used to live in the same complex. “She was a very sweet girl,” Rodriguez said, crying as she held her 4-year-old daughter.
Police have removed two other young children from the Rivera home over “concern about the supervision of Jorelys,” said Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department.

Wow Nick
You sure jump to a lot of conclusions, manufactured out of some pretty thin air.
If I might make a couple of points to counter your contention that the baby sitter, the mother, the father, the latin community is all at fault.
First of all, a single mother working nights to support her children in a factory job does not meet the criteria of a mother whose neglectful.
Her ethnicity, or the ethnicity of the inhabitants of the community is a factor in this story.
You claim that the baby sitter was neglectful and therefore some how at fault.
And further claim that prior to the ethnic influx of latinos this type of thing was unheard of.
Your quickness in passing judgement all over the story is absent the FACT that the individual who bruatally raped and murdered this child is TOTALLY responsible.
Perhaps this placing blame every where else is in one part responsible for the sub human of our species getting away with these inhuman acts over and over again.
A single mother working to support her children regardless of her ethnicity is doing what she is expected to do in society. That her husband is absent can not be assumed he was a dead beat dad. Maybe he is, maybe he isn't. Perhaps the mother is a widow and her single status is not subject to ridicule.
Your contention that the babysitter was negletful is based on even more thin air. You use that hypothesis to suggest that the police are wrong that this could of been planned since the child should not have in your opinion been at this playground.
What if there is an alter reality. Jorleys playground was a mere few feet from her door. Perhaps playing there with friends was a routine part of her day. The mother had 3 other children. Perhaps the other two younger were inside the house and the baby sitter was supposed to check on Jorleys while she cared for the other two siblings.
This would not point to neglect. She was doing as instructed. If this were the reality the police thinking that the crime was planned makes sense.
While you are right that the public is not afforded all of the information and in the interest of seeing justice done
we should not expect to be given every detail. Those kept to the vest details oft times trip up the perp.
The story in and of itself is horrible.
The pain of the baby sitter and the family unimaginable. I think it best to reserve judgement and pray that the sub human creature who orchestrated this crime is caught quickly. Then focus that rage on that person.
Blaming the victims in this case serves no purpose.
I don't know where it comes from that we are not supposed to care that this 7 year old child suffered such unthinkable acts of suffering upon her. I am incensed that the last human touch she felt was at the hand of a brutal
pig whose presence on this earth wastes good air.
Perhaps you should think about what you write and ask if it is helpful or hurtful.
Just sayin.....
It's a shame that the mother would lose her other two children. It's as if they think she planned the murder of her daughter. This could have happened to anyone anywhere. Why would they punish her?
She had a choice to make: work and put food on the table, or sit at home and watch her children slowly wither away from starvation.
I'll bet the guy is still there. Perhaps he lives there and/or is a friend of the babysitter. And,I'll bet he is Hispanic, too.
Poor child!Poor mother! When did the world get to the point that if you turn away for a spit second you could lose all that you love?
Oh, and I agree with your take on the newly formed Hispanic community and the journalists that like to deny reality in lieu of the one they'd like everyone to believe in-the utopian head up your arse scenario.
This woman was probably trying to get ahead, on her own, and like all other ethnic communities-including white-, some jerk took her joy in life away!
Those are a lot of dumb conclusions. Puerto Rican's don't require passports they are Americans. The babysitter isn't at fault. The sicko who killed this child is at fault... last but not least; look at the Georgia sex offenders list..all races and faces. Pervs come in different shades and sizes. It is sick to fault anyone other than the culprit.
Well turns out that the perp is white, so that throws out the judgements on the commuities ethnic make up. But be he, white, brown, green, or purple the good news is that he is where he belongs.
Sadly this is not likely the last we will here about this perp. It would appear that this is not his first sexual assault. While he may not have a record it does not mean this is his first crime.
These sexual predator crimes usually progress in violence, and since this was so violent I am hoping they look into unsolved crimes in jurisdictions where he might of lived and worked. Won't be surprised if they find he was responsible for other crimes.
I think it's disgusting to bring up ethnicity, does it matter White,Black,Asian,Indian? NO! Why must people have to bring race, ethnic backgroung in to this? This was an inncoen child of God,who was taken too soon.My heart goes out to this family.
I agree with this Person, the Babysitter should look be look into,it sounds Premeditated,an innocent person maybe behind bars right now due to the fact that this Negligent babysitter Disappears out of the blue Hmmmmm,Commend Sense where there is one all should be Meaning all Children should have been together with her,if that meant one was tired,Cold,etc..the fun is over time to go inside the house,As a parent whom never left her Children Unattended..Her Mother had to work to Support herself as well as Children eventhough there is Assistance out there she wanted too try to Provide,But when your Confident and trust people with your Children that is what can happened..Parents Please Trust no One but Yourself..if you have no family Members near You..and as far as Ethnicity it has nothing too do with this issue...So please wake up and smell the coffee..Do the right thing..Focus on the Babysitter once again an Innocent Person maybe locked up due too Negligent Investigation...
