BERKELEY – An event at UC Berkeley featuring a speaker from Israel was canceled and its attendees escorted to safety Monday night after hundreds of protesters surrounded the venue and broke down the doors, according to university officials.

Chancellor Carol T. Christ and Executive Vice Chancellor Benjamin E. Hermalin addressed the incident in a letter to the campus community Tuesday. They said the actions of the protesters "violated not only our values, but also some of our most fundamental values."

"We deeply respect the right to protest as intrinsic to the values of a democracy and an institution of higher education," the officials said. "Yet, we cannot ignore protest activity that interferes with the rights of others to hear and/or express perspectives of their choosing."

The incident happened at the Zellerbach Playhouse, where attorney Ran Bar-Yoshafat was scheduled to speak about his experience fighting in the war in Gaza, among other topics.

"Minutes before the event was to start, a crowd of some 200 protesters began to surround the building," Christ and Hermalin said in the letter. "Doors were broken open and the protesters gained unauthorized entry to the building. The event was canceled, and the building was evacuated to protect the speaker and members of the audience."

The event was organized by Students Supporting Israel, according to club member and second-year student Sharon Knafelman. The 19-year-old arrived at the venue to find protesters, many of them masked, blocking the front doors. As Knafelman made her way inside, a fellow attendee was grabbed by the neck and shoved, she said.

Knafelman said the protesters also shoved a second attendee and yanked on her arm hard enough to send her to the emergency room.

Just half of the expected audience of 60 was present for the event, which was originally scheduled to take place at Wheeler Hall and later moved to the Zellerbach Playhouse after another student club, Bears for Palestine, published a social media post calling on the community to shut down the event, Knafelman said.

The post claimed Bar-Yoshafat was dangerous and had "committed crimes against humanity."

An online account for Bears for Palestine did not immediately return a message seeking comment on the post and its involvement in the incident.

The Zellerbach Playhouse was picked as an alternate location because it was believed to be more secure, university officials said.

"We approach events like this with two priorities: to do what we can so that the event can go forward, and to do what we can to safeguard student safety and well-being," Christ and Hermalin said. "Last night, despite our efforts and the ample number of police officers, it was not possible to do both given the size of the crowd and the threat of violence."

At one point, the protesters used a side entrance to get inside the building and tried to push past a contingent of university police officers who were providing security. Knafelman said they called the attendees "pigs" and other slurs, including anti-Semitic language.

The university police chief and another school official then arrived at the venue and told the attendees and Bar-Yoshafat they needed to leave, Knafelman said, adding that they were led out of the building through an underground passageway.

In their letter, Christ and Hermalin expressed their "deep remorse and sympathy" to the attendees, as well as urged them to report what they witnessed and experienced to law enforcement and the Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination.

"We share your anger and concern, and we understand that we must do all that we can to prevent anything like this from happening again," Christ and Hermalin said.

I wonder what the (unknown number of) police did to control the hostile crowd--did they simply "stand down"? Surely they could have grabbed and arrested the masked perps at the time and carted them off, thereby allowing the talk to proceed as scheduled. This is what  paddy wagons are for.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, urban crime was momentarily beyond the Establishment’s ability to redefine back into normalcy. Fueled in part by the crack wars, New York had 1,905 murders in 1989, the last year Ed Koch was mayor, and 2,245—the city’s all-time record—in 1990, the first year that black Leftist and “racial healer” David Dinkins was mayor.

In response, over the past 20 years, three brilliant Irishmen, New York City police commissioners Ray Kelly and William Bratton, and Bratton’s number two man, John Timoney, brought about miraculous crime reductions in New York City and elsewhere.

The official story: Republican Mayor Rudy Giuliani revolutionized crime-fighting with his first police commissioner, Bratton, who employed “broken windows” policing. The theory of “Broken windows,” or “order maintenance policing,” comes from the late James Q. Wilson and the husband-and-wife team of George Kelling and Catherine Coles. It focuses on low-level, “quality-of-life” offenses, such as public drinking, public urination, and fare-beating. (Funny, this is never applied to illegal immigration).

But, actually, the drop in official crime numbers began under Mayor Dinkins’ last police commissioner, Ray Kelly (1992 through 1993).

Giuliani beat the incompetent Dinkins in their close return match in 1993, and appointed Bratton to run the NYPD.

The modest improvements of the last two Dinkins years accelerated under Giuliani, continuing throughout his two terms (1994 through 2001), and into the regime of his nominal Republican (now officially independent) successor, Michael Bloomberg (2002-???).

(Mysteriously, the current New York Times Homicide Map radically contradicts the reports on recent years’ murder counts in the same newspaper that I cited above, stating the numbers as only 386, 329, and 209, respectively, for 2009, 2010, and 2011. The brash, egotistical Bratton wanted all the credit for the crime reduction, so Giuliani pushed him out after 27 months. But under Jewish former fed (DEA and the U.S. Marshal’s Service) Howard Safir, a good company man, and the corrupt, since-convicted Bernard Kerik, the crime figures continued to drop.

Proponents credited three factors for the miraculous “turnaround”: the focus on “quality-of-life” offenses; COMPSTAT, whereby the department constantly pours statistics into its computers, determines where and when crime is peaking, and floods the zone with cops; and the public theater of departmental meetings, where the commissioner publicly humiliates commanders who failed to produce “good” numbers. Those features have been institutionalized nationwide.

To the degree that the reduced murder numbers are legitimate, they have been brought about by a controversial policy, which the Commissioner generally avoids discussing—of the confiscation of thousands of guns through the racial profiling of black and Hispanic males, who were stopped and frisked some 595,000 times in 2011. And then there’s fakestat. It was originally exposed halfway through Giuliani’s first term, by liberals.

“… on January 29, 1996, Newsday’s Leonard Levitt charged that the city had failed to disclose a recent double-rape, a shooting homicide, and the fatal shooting of a car thief by a cop.” [My report “Crime Stories,” Chronicles magazine, August, 1996].

The NYPD brass asserted that a reporter had stolen the crime reports from the headquarters press room. Right.

In my first VDARE.com investigation, “Disappearing” Urban Crime, in May 2004, I reported that the NYPD’s two main fakestat methods were turning felonies into misdemeanors or non-crimes, and discouraging crime victims from filing reports.

In October 2005, The Village Voice’s Paul Moses exposed another fakestat method: the NYPD had undercounted by thousands the number of aggravated assaults, whose victims had been hospitalized or treated in ERs:

“From [1997] until 2002, the number of assault victims who were either hospitalized or treated in emergency rooms in the city went up in every year but one for a total increase of 19 percent…. The official story for the same period was that aggravated assaults had decreased 24 percent.

Since 2002, Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Kelly have blown off the scandals.

Just as New York’s pioneering policing methods have been institutionalized nation-wide, so, it appears, has fakestat:

Philadelphia

Under Commissioner John Timoney (1998-2002), the Philadelphia PD was caught reducing crime numbers by counting burglary complaints under the non-crime category of “missing property,” and by “disappearing” massive numbers of rapes by variously “unfounding” them and sitting on rape complaints.[Philadelphia Crime Statistics Under Attack by Chief, Reno, By Debbie Goldberg,The Washington Post, Tuesday, December 1, 1998]

Dallas

In 2009, Dallas police were caught “disappearing” thousands of cases. The DPD would rule that crime victims’ police reports were “unfounded” without investigating them, and routinely ignored vehicle burglary complaints.

That same year, Detective Mickey East, from the Domestic Violence Unit, was found to have stashed 2,274 domestic abuse complaint files in his garage. In 508 of those cases, the victim was again victimized.

The police brass cast East as a rogue cop. But he had only served the last five years of an almost 40-year-long Dallas PD career in Domestic Violence. He likely continued habits he’d acquired elsewhere in the department. Chicago

Every weekend in Chicago, dozens of people are shot, and yet every month, for over three years running, the Department announces that crime is down “overall.” CITE

Last year, Police Superintendant Gerry McCarthy was caught covering up racist attacks by black gang-bangers on white beachgoers on Memorial Day weekend. [See The Great Chicago Memorial Day Gang Attack Cover-Up, Nicholas Stix, Uncensored, July 7, 2011.]

In June 2011, it was also revealed that young blacks had been terrorizing whites and the occasional Asian in the city’s wealthiest, safest neighborhoods—the Gold Coast, Streeterville, and Lakeview—for a year, but that police and the media had conspired to cover up the attacks. In April, Mayor Rahm Emanuel contended that “overall crime” and rape were down 10 and 15 percent, respectively, in the first quarter of this year, despite homicides having increased by 60 percent and non-fatal shootings increasing by 37 percent!

While it is possible for homicides and shootings to drop while crime overall rises, it is impossible, as a practical matter, for the opposite to occur. Murder is the pinnacle of violent anarchy. Nashville

In Nashville, former police chief Ronal Serpas (2004-2010) radically abused a traditional Nashville PD fakestat that should never have been tolerated, clearing crimes “by exception.”

Under Chief Serpas, the NPD was eventually “clearing” more cases by “exception” than by arrests.

Detroit

On January 13, Police Chief Ralph Godbee asserted that homicides rose by 12 percent in the nation’s murder capital, from 308 in 2010 to 344 in 2011, while, suspiciously, “serious” crimes decreased by 8 percent overall. Milwaukee

The most recent fakestat scandal hit the Milwaukee PD, which is run by another bright, capable Irishman, Chief Ed Flynn.

Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reporter Ben Poston determined that over the course of the past three years, the police had deliberately misclassified at least 500 cases of aggravated assault as misdemeanor “simple assault” in order to transform an increase in violent crime of at least 1.1 percent into a 2.3 percent decrease.

Some 1,300 cases of aggravated assault had been deceptively reclassified as misdemeanor assault—so that the increase in violent crime in fact could be several points higher than the 1.1 percent that Poston conservatively estimated. But the Department stonewalled his requests for more information on 800 additional cases which followed the same pattern.

“In Milwaukee, aggravated assaults have made up about half of all violent crime since [Chief Ed] Flynn took charge in 2008. Among the four violent crimes, the largest percentage drop has come from aggravated assaults, falling 35% since 2007.”

My conclusion: Diversity is not strength. It is, among other things, irrepressible interracial crime. The American political Establishment, liberal and “conservative,” simply cannot handle this. Something has to give. Honest crime statistics are just the beginning.

At first, I thought my tireless reader-researcher RC had accidentally sent me the same story about Chicago’s Friday night shootings twice. After all, in both cases, there were 17 shootings, but I figured the increase from one to five dead meant that four more of the wounded had since succumbed. No such luck. These were 17 fresh, Saturday night shootings.

5 dead, 12 wounded in attacks across Chicago

Five people were killed and at least 12 other people wounded in shootings Saturday night and Sunday morning across the city.

Police were questioning two suspects after Deering District officers were able to chase down the occupants of a car who fired on three people, killing a 24-year-old man, about 1:50 a.m. on the 5300 block of South Loomis Boulevard in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.

The 24-year-old who died was shot multiple times and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was declared dead. A 24-year-old man and a 22-year-old man were being treated in serious condition at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, police said.

The victims were shot on the street, and Deering District officers near 53rd and Loomis heard the shots and found the victims shot, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

The officers radioed for ambulances, then talked to the victims about who shot them and got a description of their attackers. The officers broadcast a description of a silver sedan that had fled west toward Ashland Avenue to other officers, and other Deering officers were able to locate the car. A Deering sergeant was then able to stop the car in an alley near 55th and Elizabeth streets, Mirabelli said.

One of the suspects was caught after a foot chase through gangways and yards, and the other was located and caught in a nearby vacant home, Mirabelli said.

Police have impounded the car and found a gun that may have been used in the shootings.

The evening attacks follow the fatal shooting of a 6-year-old girl and the wounding of four other people in Chicago within an hour Saturday afternoon, and 16 shootings, including the slaying of a 42-year-old man, overnight Friday and early Saturday morning.

In other shootings:

A 36-year-old man was killed on the 7500 block of South Wolcott Avenue in the Gresham neighborhood about 1:20 a.m., police said. He was at a party on the block, in a back yard, when someone drove by and opened fire, police said. Police said the man, identified as Bert Lindsey of the 7600 block of South Winchester Avenue, didn't have a criminal history. He was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center about 2:15 a.m., a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner's office said.

A 24-year-old man was found dead in a car at the University of Chicago Medical Center about 10:30 p.m., according to authorities. He's believed to have been shot in the back in the 6300 block of South Ellis Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood and was driven to the hospital, police said.A spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office identified him as Jeremy Anthony and said he lived about a block south from where he was shot.

Someone standing in the street shot him while he was sitting on the passenger side of the car's backseat, police said. The car's driver took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

A 22-year-old man was killed in the East Chatham neighborhood Saturday evening. He was identified as Vincent Fitts, of the 4100 block of West Cermak Road, by a spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office.

Fitts was shot in the head and was dead on the scene about 7:52 p.m. in the 800 block of East 79th Street at Cottage Grove Avenue, authorities said.

A 24-year-old man was shot multiple times about 7:04 p.m. in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, police said.

The man was standing on the street in the 5900 Block of South Fairfield Avenue when a vehicle pulled up and one of the people inside stepped out, pulled a weaopon and started shooting at him, the man told police. A spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office identified him as Adrian Cruz, and said he lived on the same block where he was shot. He was taken to Stroger Hospital and was in critical condition, Zala said. He later died, Alfaro said.

A man was shot on the 3300 block of West Evergreen Avenue in the Humboldt Park neighborhood about 4:20 a.m., police said. He's in serious condition, after being shot in the leg and chest, police said.

A 17-year-old man was shot in the face and back on the 500 block of East 67th Street in the West Woodlawn neighborhood about 2:15 a.m., police said and is in serious condition at Stroger Hospital.

Police said a 22-year-old man was wounded in a drive-by shooting about 1 a.m. in the West Woodlawn neighborhood. He was walking on the 800 block of East 66th Street when someone inside a passing blue sedan opened fire, hitting him in the left shoulder, police said. He was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, police said.

A 20-year-old man was shot in the groin about 12:05 a.m. in the 5900 block of South Laflin Street in the Englewood neighborhood while he was sitting on a porch, police said. He told police that he heard shots and felt pain and was taken to Stroger Hospital in stable condition, police said.

About a half hour earlier, a 33-year-old man was shot in the back and the leg on the 6300 block of South Richmond Street in the Marquette Park neighborhood, police said. A man approached him and demanded money after pulling out a gun.
The 33-year-old ran and the shooter opened fire, police said. The victim shot was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition, police said.

A 28-year-old woman was shot in the face in the Jefferson Park neighborhood just before 10 p.m. Saturday, according to police. Someone fired shots at her when she opened the door to her apartment on the 5000 block of North Mango Avenue, said police, who indicated it might be domestic-related. The woman is in stable condition at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, police said.

Three people were shot on the 8300 block of South Homan Avenue in the Ashburn neighborhood about 9:10 p.m., police said. Two 14-year-old girls were shot in the leg and a 20-year-old man was shot in the chest.

Chicago Fire Department ambulances took one of the teens to Advocate Christ Medical Center and the other to Holy Cross Hospital, police said. Both are in good condition. The man went to Stroger Hospital, police said, and he's in serious condition.

About 7:33 p.m. in the 2900 block of West Congress Parkway in the Lawndale neighborhood, a 37-year-old man was shot in the head and back and was in critical condition on-scene, Zala said. He was later taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

State Police were handling that investigation because it was on a ramp to the Eisenhower Expressway, and referred all calls to a spokeswoman, who was not immediately available.

Guess what they blame when the weather is extremely cold? Cabin fever.

Cognitive Dissonance in Chicago: Last Weekend, 20 People were Shot and 5 Killed of All Ages and in All Situations, Yet Crime is Dropping Like a Rock!

The Chicago Police Department “reported a drop in crime for the 30th consecutive month in June. Homicides are down. [sic] 14.4 percent compared to June of 2010. There have been 31 fewer homicides compared to the first half of last year.”

Either Chicago used to have more violent crime than Baghdad, but now only has just as much crime as its Iraqi counterpart, Chicago’s hospitals have the world’s greatest trauma surgeons, to save gunshot victims, or Chicago’s PD has a world-class creative writing program. (See my VDARE investigative report, “‘Disappearing’ Urban Crime.”)

Even ABC reporter Jason Knowles, after reading the CPD’s claims on the video above, looked askance at them. “But Ben and Judy, obviously that does not seem to be the case when you look at last weekend…”

Maybe I’m overinterpreting the available stats, but the below-linked story, “Homicides down, car thefts up,” has me wondering. In a city as violent, gang-ridden, and diverse as Chicago, that statistical relationship doesn’t sound right. It is easier to hide violent crime than it is car theft, because the latter involves insurance companies, who require police reports, as part of the claim process. Police can use creativity to turn an assault into “harassment” or a “verbal dispute,” grand larceny of small items from a household into “lost/stolen items” but have not yet figured out how to sell Grand Theft Auto (GTA) as a “lost/stolen item.” Massive auto theft is usually the product of gangs who commit GTA in a systematic fashion, and who are also the kings of violent crime.

I know of four ways to reduce Chicago’s violent crime rate, without statistical legerdemain:

1. Massive arrests of overwhelmingly black gangbangers, which would leave most black neighborhoods with few young men;

2. Massive stop-and-frisk operations, ridding the streets of illegal weapons;

3. The end to criminal justice affirmative action; and

4. Paying black women to either be sterilized or to submit to long-term birth control via patches, implants, or vaginal rings.

Since none of the above methods is being implemented, and the CPD was recently caught covering up racist black Memorial Day weekend gang violence on at least two Chicago beaches (also), as well as initially falsely claiming that all of the racist attacks committed by young blacks on whites and Asians in Chicago’s toniest neighborhoods were the work of one gang, I have to consider the CPD’s claims with at least as much skepticism as Jason Knowles does.

And none of the aforementioned methods is likely to be implemented, due to black opposition. The explanation for the history of black opposition to any method likely to reduce black crime is simple: Blacks in America overwhelmingly support black crime.

5 dead, 20 injured in weekend violence

July 11, 2011 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- New numbers show a drop in overall violent crime in Chicago just on the heels of a weekend that included dozens of shootings.

Five people are dead and 20 injured from the gunfire. One of the people injured was a 27-year-old woman shot in the head at 111th and Ewing Avenue. Police say a vehicle pulled up and opened fire. The victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Also on the South Side, a man and woman in their 50s were shot in a vehicle.

"last night, after seeing chatter about google/alphabet’s much-ballyhooed new ai tool, gemini, I checked for myself. any product rollout disastrous enough to cause a one-day share drop of 4.4% for a firm with a $1.73 trillion market capitalization must be quite a spectacle, I thought. Matt Walsh’s recap was worth it just for the look on his face.

This is refreshing. Check out the audience here on the Bob Barker version, 24/7 stream. Dressed casually but decently, not trashily. No freaky stuff. Men are men, women and women. Just wholesome, middle-America types, even the Californians. Yes, obviously some effort to have at least one Contestant of Color involved, but not in an in-your-face kind of way. You’d be okay with having them as next-door neighbors.
