THIS COMMENT REFUSES TO APPEAR, NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I SEND IT! Is it possible that there's an auto-ban on the word "ne_gro"? It seems ridiculous- GRA's comments are far worse than mine!

This was in reference to:

Wish I had the source for this, but I read long ago that when free blacks went North after the Civil War to look for work, a disproportionate number went into the line of work they were best suited for: pimping. (Presumably among other criminal activities.) One of many reasons they were ill-regarded.
Possibly related, an anecdote from a book I've been reading on-and-off about Old New York (1800s)- a social worker visits a sick woman in one of the city's poorest sections, and discovers she's sharing the room with "the decomposing body of a white woman who had been beaten to death some days previous by the negro with whom she had been cohabiting."
