Appearance and reality

From TV GUIDE, 1975:

An article about real-life convicts talking about crime shows they get to watch while incarcerated-one of the cons says, "Everybody likes Angie Dickinson [Police Woman], even though she doesn't look like a real policewoman. The women cops I've known aren't that pretty, they looked more like truckdrivers in drag. They had a kind of hard, mannish appearance."

Like 99.9% of women who choose to go into men's professions!

Also in this vein, I just read about an old NET program purporting to explain why Latin American countries (including the Caribbean) have traditionally been backward and underdeveloped- not because they're populated by backward people (black and Indian), but because of "DISCRIMINATION" against those people! The program also pinned blame on the more advanced colonizers from Spain, who exploited the natives and- get this- decimated "SOPHISTICATED Indian civilizations"! (The ones who practiced human sacrifice, perhaps.)

The program was imported from Canada, circa 1965.

Not hiring a black is not discrimination--it's good business.

Not allowing a black in your bar or restaurant is not discrimination--it's smart.

Not allowing blacks to live in a White neighborhood is not discrimination--it's a matter of safety.

"NEWS WITH NO AGENDA",ASS(OCIATED)PRESS,POSTS ANOTHER STORY WITH AN AGENDA

GRA:That's the claim, when you click on ap--"news with no agenda."

This story about "South Park" is so blatantly anti-Trump,you can visualize the writer in a cheerleading outfit with the words "HATE U " with Trump's pic on the blouse,as he sends it to the editor.

NEW YORK (AP) — “South Park” continued its cartoon assault on the Trump administration Wednesday, with an episode that addressed the federal takeover of Washington, D.C.'s police department.

A 20-second promo released by Comedy Central depicted the recurring character “Towelie” — an anthropomorphic towel — riding in a bus past the U.S. Supreme Court building and White House, where armed troops were patrolling. A tank rolled by in front of the White House.

The episode also roasted world leaders and tech CEOs for kowtowing to President Donald Trump. Eventually Towelie ended up with the president in the Oval Office.

The season premiere mocked Trump’s body in a raunchy manner and depicted him sharing a bed with Satan. That scenario reappeared in Wednesday’s episode.

The White House has dismissed “South Park” as a fourth-rate, no-longer-relevant show. But it has been attracting attention; Comedy Central said the Noem episode had the highest audience share in the show’s history, a reference to the percentage of people with televisions on watching the cartoon.

GRA:"White House says...BUT!"
Always a counter from ass(ociated)press. They just can't report the news on its own merits.

Most stories are like this one--except for their fear stories--which have no counter from anyone.

"The Simpsons" and "South Park" still running after so many years encapsulates what a farce our culture has become.

I suppose they're only kept alive because of their liberalism- though I thought "South Park" attacks both sides of the aisle (never saw it). They did have one commendable gag- when they referred to the Screen Actors Guild as the "Film Actors Guild." (Instead of SAG...)

re: the billionaires and woke math

I was sent to an education conference - it was about 15 years ago - mostly about remedial course strategies, because so many underprepared students arriving in college unable to do 8th grade math. Overall good alternative strategies and they didn't whack us with DEI all the time. It gave me the justification I needed to do some creative things that worked out well.

We were all supposed to come out of there saying "oh wow, Bill Gates is giving out GRANTS, we're going to apply for a grant from Bill Gates and use more TECHNOLOGY in the classroom!!" Then the DEI comes in the grant process where we push the DEI "we serve __% underprivileged impoverished minorities". So what? Every bottom-dwelling open admissions state school's grant application says the same thing.

We didn't get a grant. No big deal. As it turned out just a few years later Admin jumped on a new bandwagon. No more remedial courses. Kids that can't solve 2x - 5 = 17 (and God help us if there are fractions instead of integers in that equation) can fail the placement test and they still go directly into the freshman credit course. They just get enrolled in a 1-credit "support" corequisite.

They treat the support course as a joke and play for the "pass-me-along" for a gift of a C in the credit course just like they did in K-12 to get their worthless high school diplomas. Lazy faculty go along with a lot of it to avoid the pressure from admin intent on retention retention retention so the students re-enroll and take out more student loans to pay for salaries and building projects.

And either way, they don't really do homework. They use the phone app to get the answers. Now AI-enhanced phone app. Lots of lazy faculty out there making $50K - $100K and up just going through the motions because it's easier than trying to enforce any standards. Compute grades with high weights on attendance and homework and dumb down the exams enough to make sure you get a high-enough passing rate. Or for online courses, just do the exams online too, we don't want anyone to have to come to campus to take an exam in the testing center, not with covid variants still popping up.

Or they use a homework service. Like the woman student of color who "did" the entire semester of statistics homework (classroom class but online homework) in the first two weeks of the course. It obviously wasn't her own work. The logs had timestamps that looked like normal hours for someone in Europe or India. Impressively short times to complete the problems.

I complimented her on the achievement. I can't say what needs to be said and you know why. She said "Oh, my daughter is in high school and she's smart and she showed me how to do it." Well okay, "I'm offering you a chance to take the final exam this week and you can finish the course three months early." I got lucky. She accepted a deal to reset the homework and I'm pretty sure she did the rest of the course on her own. And earned a legitimate C. I'm glad it worked out. She probably paid hundreds of dollars for Rajiv or Gustav or Abdul, whoever did all her homework.

Sorry, long grant rant. I can't help myself.

“I’m going to be going out tonight, I think, with the police and with the military, of course. We’re going to do a job,” Trump told Todd Sternes on his radio show.

The president went on to say that the military stationed in Washington is doing a “fantastic job” at law enforcement in the nation’s capital.

President Donald Trump federalized control of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department on Aug. 11, ordering about 800 National Guard troops to assist with law enforcement.

“I’m announcing a historic action to rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor, and worse,“ Trump said at a White House press briefing at the time.

“This is Liberation Day in D.C., and we’re going to take our capital back.”

Starnes responded to Trump’s news of his plans to go on patrol, pondering whether the president would be given a uniform, and joked, “I want to see my president tase someone tonight.”

...it won't be too difficult to know which car Trump is in. It's the one with the two helicopters flying over it.

There used to be a Saturday morning cartoon called "Super President," about a crime-fighting you-know-what. Never watched it because even at a young age, I thought it sounded dumb. Fiction, meet reality!
