"(bbc) the initial shooting occurred at 11:36 local time (15:36 gmt) on sunday near the blue grass airport, a regional hub in Fayette county.
A state trooper pulled over the suspect's car on Terminal Drive after receiving a registration plate reader alert, Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers told a news conference. He said that incident had no connection to the airport.
The suspect shot the trooper, inflicting non-life threatening injuries, according to Chief Weathers.
The gunman then carried out a car-jacking, during which the vehicle's occupant was not hurt, before driving towards the church about 16 miles (25km) away, with law enforcement in pursuit.
"The suspect fired his weapon at individuals on church property," Chief Weathers said.
"Preliminary information indicates that the suspect may have had a connection to the individuals at the church."
Four people - two males and two females - were shot on church grounds.
An official from the county coroner's office named the two women as Beverly Gum, 72, and Christina Combs, 32. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
The two male victims were transported to a local hospital, with one sustaining critical injuries and the other in a stable condition.
"The suspect was shot by responding law enforcement and was pronounced deceased at the scene," said Chief Weathers, adding that the gunman's identity would be released once next-of-kin had been notified.
"Sometimes, there are things that just happen," said Chief Weathers, putting himself into the "negro philosophy hall of fame",in one sentence.
If voted in by committee members Leroy Nietzsche,Aristotle Watermelonseed and Oprah Goldberg, he would be the initial entrant into this currently empty club.
The county coroner official said the church was small and most attendees were either related or close friends.

WHITE,METH ADDICT,47 YEAR OLD,"ASPIRING RAPPER",NAMED,"HONKY KONG",ID'D AS GUNMAN IN LEXINGTON CHURCH MURDERS
GRA:When Whites are influenced by blacks.
(Lexington herald-leader)The gunman behind a deadly shooting spree that ended at a rural Kentucky church, killing two women and wounding a state trooper, has been identified.
The Fayette County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Guy House, 47, died from gunshot wounds after three officers opened fire at him outside the Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington on Sunday.
Before fleeing to the church, House allegedly shot a Kentucky State Police trooper at about 11.35 a.m. on Sunday after being pulled over near Terminal Drive near Blue Grass Airport. The trooper sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Lexington Police Department.
Police said House then carjacked a vehicle before driving 16 miles to church, allegedly looking for the mother of his children who was not on the premises, where he opened fire at parishioners.
Churchgoers Beverly Gumm, 72, and Christina Combs, 32, were both pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. Two male parishioners were taken to the University of Kentucky hospital for treatment, with one in critical condition and the other listed as stable.
Gumm’s daughter told The Lexington Herald-Leader that she was with her mother in the basement of the church, cooking, when House appeared looking for her sister. When he was told she wasn’t there, House reportedly replied, “Someone is gonna have to die then.” The gunman then opened fire, shooting at Gumm twice, fatally wounding her.
The gunman was shot by responding law enforcement officers and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
House had a lengthy criminal history, including for auto theft, court records show.
In 2022, House was arrested following a lengthy manhunt in Lexington on fleeing and evading, resisting arrest and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon charges, Lex18 reported at the time.
The gunman tested positive for methamphetamine last year in a court-ordered drug test that was part of his probation. He was released in January 2025.
The suspect had had a domestic situation with an ex-girlfriend who then filed protection orders against him, an official told ABC News.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that House was due in court on Monday morning on domestic violence charges.
House was an aspiring rapper who performed under the name “H***y Kong.”
