“The Oscars pay tribute to the actors, filmmakers, executives and craftspeople who passed away over the past year with the Oscars 2025 In Memoriam.”

N.S.: More important movie people died in 2024 than I’d recalled.

Gene Hackman died just two weeks ago, but if the Academy hadn’t memorialized him now, it might have forgotten him in 2026, and Morgan Freeman, who’s already 87, might not have been around to commemorate his passing. (Clint Eastwood will speak on behalf of Freeman. What’s that, you say? Clint’s almost 95 himself? Yeah, but I expect him to outlive me, and he’s already older than my late parents were.)

I can remember so many Oscar telecasts that memorialized one titan after another, with stunning shots from masterpieces. Well, I recently saw All about Eve and Witness for the Prosecution, but their respective stars died generations ago.

The Oscars are the "NoStars" these days. Give the winner of an award a statue of a question mark--as in,"WHO the hell are YOU--and why are you on my television set?"
