I believe the "scandal" was the fault of a theatrical actor with the same name, who was thereafter re-christened William "Stage" Boyd to distinguish him from Hoppy. The entire series of movies (restored) is available in a single modestly-priced DVD set. The films are a mixed bag, especially if you've been spoiled (like myself) by the high-quality Bs from Republic, but Mr. Cassidy is a striking presence.

I believe, years ago, there were little 8 mm movies of Hopalong Cassidy--that my parents once bought--and when I was a kid, they were played on an ancient Bell and Howell movie projector. No sound. It was a warmup act for family movies every Christmas for quite a few years. In those movies,he moved rather quickly.
