In a first day wrap-up by a Memphis TV reporter, she said the prosecution isn't seeking the death penalty, because it would make it harder to obtain a guilty verdict. With the death penalty off the table, the jury is presumably more likely to convict.

My take? The makeup of the jury detailed above—six blacks and six whites—makes this a reasonable assumption.

YEP. Negroes on the jury and no death penalty. Gotta be careful. Some many young negro men sent to the chair [needles nowadays] for no reason at all. We know that.
