HOUSTON -
Two suspected car thieves are dead after crashing into a tree in southeast Houston, police say.
According to Houston police, the two suspects stole a car from a gas station as the victim stopped to fuel up.
Danny McCampbell identified himself as the car's owner. He told Local 2 he stopped at the gas station just a few blocks away, left the car running in the parking lot and ran inside for a minute. When he came out the car was gone.
According to police, instead of calling the police to make a report, McCampbell called a friend and the two went and searched a nearby neighborhood for the car themselves. It didn't take long for them to spot it and the suspects.
"At that time they followed the car and tried to get [it] back," said Sgt. Francisco Briones, with the Houston Police Department. "The driver was going at a high rate of speed and lost control."
Witnessed told police the suspect was going about 60 mph, about double the speed limit in the residential neighborhood. At some point, the suspects lost control of the car and crashed into a tree on Tareyton Lane near Donegal Way.
The man and woman who died in the crash are believed to be in their 30s. Their names have not been released.
