HOUSTON -
A wild scene unfolded Monday afternoon in northeast Houston after a suspect in a stolen car led police on a chase and collided with a family in a Jeep before slamming into a pole. The suspect died at the scene.

Inside that Jeep was a 5-month-old baby who was taken to the hospital. That baby girl may never know how lucky she is.

"I knew he was gonna hit something coming down this way," said witness Sheila Gates.

Gates says she and her granddaughter were standing outside their home when they were nearly hit.

"We saw the car drive by real fast. She said, 'Granny look!' And I went to look and if I hadn't stepped back, it would've hit me," Gates said.

Police say the driver fled a traffic stop a few miles away after the license plate came back stolen. The suspect swerved into the opposite lane of traffic on Hirsch Road before crashing in the intersection.

"And I pray to God that they're not hurt as bad as what it seems right here, right now," Gates told us.

According to police, the baby girl along three other occupants in the Jeep and a silver Jaguar, were taken to nearby hospitals. Everyone is expected to survive.

The suspect, however, died at the scene after wrapping his car around a traffic pole.

"He was going so fast. For what?" Gates said.

Police have yet to identify the deceased suspect, only saying he was an Hispanic man in his late 30s
