Petula Clark Singing “Look to the Rainbow”: Live “Downtown in Paris” at L’Olympia

With St. Patrick’s Day approaching, the humor is on me now.

We live in Xanadu now, and my boy is almost as big as me, but when he was a newborn, and my pipes were in better shape, I used to stand in one of the few free spots in our 160 square foot room, hold him in my arms, and sing this to him.

Look to the Rainbow (from Finian’s Rainbow)
Words by E.Y. “Yip” Harburg
Music by Burton Lane

On the day I was born,
Said my father, said he,
I’ve an elegant legacy,
Waitin’ for ye.

‘Tis a rhyme for your lips,
And a song for your heart,
To sing it whenever
The world falls apart.

Look! Look! Look to the rainbow,
Follow it o’er the hill and stream,
Look! Look! Look to the rainbow,
Follow the fellow who follows a dream.

So I bundled me heart,
And I roamed the world free,
To the east, with the lark,
To the west, with the sea.

And I searched all the earth,
And I scanned all the skies,
‘Til I found it at last
In my own true love’s eyes.

Look! Look! Look to the rainbow,
Follow it o’er the hill and stream,
Look! Look! Look to the rainbow,
Follow the fellow who follows a dream.

Follow the fellow,
Follow the fellow,
Follow the fellow…
Who follows .. a dream.
