The Great Escape: Elmer Bernstein’s Opening Theme
I was shocked to learn that Bernstein was not nominated for the Oscar for best dramatic score that year.
Though Bernstein composed some other great theme music, most notably for National Geographic, his theme to The Great Escape (1963) conclude the masterpiece roll he went on with The Magnificent Seven (1960), and continued with To Kill A Mockingbird (1962), both of which scores were nominated, but did not win. He finally won his lone Oscar for, of all things, Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967).
Listen also to:
The Magnificent Seven Suite;
To Kill A Mockingbird (Opening Theme); and
National Geographic.
