(NYTimes)A jury of 12 Manhattanites has been chosen to decide the fate of Daniel Penny, a Long Island man who put a homeless man in a fatal chokehold on a subway car last year.
Mr. Penny, 26, faces charges of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in the May 2023 death of Jordan Neely, who had a history of mental illness and who Mr. Penny said had been threatening passengers.
The jurors and four alternates, who Justice Maxwell T. Wiley ruled would be kept anonymous, include a cross section of residents from across the borough, including Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen, Washington Heights and Harlem.
On Friday, those jurors will hear the lawyers explain in opening arguments their conceptions of a case that divided New York City as soon as a video of Mr. Penny, who is white, restraining Mr. Neely, who was Black, rocketed around the internet. Some New Yorkers saw Mr. Penny’s actions on the F train as criminal. Others saw him as a champion for frightened riders.
Jury selection, which began last week, was contentious. Screening more than 100 prospective jurors, the first step in a criminal trial, took nearly two weeks and at times set off arguments between the lawyers.
The defense, led by Mr. Penny’s lawyer Thomas A. Kenniff, hired a jury consultant who has worked with a wide spectrum of defendants, including the president of Brazil, Kyle Rittenhouse and O.J. Simpson. The consultant, Jo-Ellan Dimitrius, was in court with Mr. Penny’s legal team throughout the two weeks, taking notes and making suggestions.
Eight of the 12 seated jurors appeared to be white. On Wednesday, prosecutors in the Manhattan district attorney’s office argued to Justice Wiley that Mr. Penny’s lawyers were unconstitutionally weeding out people of color without legitimate reasons.
A prosecutor, Dafna Yoran, argued to the judge that defense lawyers were using spurious reasons to people of color from the jury, including family histories of mental illness and drug use, political affiliations and one prospective juror’s purple hair. She said white jurors with similar circumstances were not challenged.

Fitting name then, for a state,which has actually been annexed BY mexico--who gets the best of both worlds:Expand their territory without having to spend any pesos on crime or social programs.
WE'LL pay for the takeover--it's on the United States' dime. But new mexico is not an aberration--not at all. The trend elsewhere,is the same as our 47th state--surrounding areas heading toward 50% spicanos,in what used to be an Anglo-Saxon country. The same situation goes for blacks in Chicago,St.Louis,New Orleans,Baltimore,Atlanta--demographics between 40 and 70% black and rising.
Four years of harris will stick a fork in Whitey's America(if biden hasn't already done it)--and White America IS what America always was--to any reasonable person.

(ZH)Axios is reporting Thursday that Iran is still preparing a major retaliation in response to the Israeli aerial attack of the overnight and early morning hours of last Saturday. Israel's strikes on missile and military facilities was itself a much anticipated response to the Oct.1st ballistic missile attack.
While most regional observers believe the tit-for-tat has cooled down, reflected in declining oil prices this week, the Axios report cites a pair of Israeli officials to say "Israeli intelligence suggests Iran is preparing to attack Israel from Iraqi territory in the coming days, possibly before the US presidential election."
This would involve large numbers of drones and ballistic missiles, they say. Throughout the Gaza war, there have been sporadic drones launched by Iran-backed paramilitary units in Iraq, but nothing on a major scale.
Israeli sources on Thursday have suggested Iran is actually moving ballistic missiles to prepare for such an attack.
Also, Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Hossein Salami has been cited as saying that Iran's response will be "different from any scenario" Israel might expect.

Actually, besides the Indians, New Mexico was originally 100% Hispanic. Whites began moving in during the 1800's but the north is still mostly Hispanic. The south was relatively empty because the Apaches were so fierce. More recently, Mexicans have moved into the south as Whites made it safe from Indians over a hundred years ago. By the way, if you travel to northern New Mexico, don't make the mistake of calling the people Mexicans--they will be furious and proudly proclaim that they are NOT Mexicans. Moreover the Spanish they speak is not the same as spoken in Mexico as their ancestors have been there for 400 years.
I had my own problems with mex neighbors next to me-- 8 years ago. I don't need a trip to N.M. to experience spicano culture,lol.

I got them evicted btw,for being gun toting,drug dealing,prostitute pushing,sex offending wetbacks.
Good ending to the story,though they did slash my tires the day they moved out.
