So, this is how it's going to be with her. "justice Ketanji Brown Jackson compares ban on child sex changes to law against interracial marriage"
Jackson reminds me of a black philosophy professor I took half a course with in grad school, Frank Kirkland. The class was on Jürgen Habermas' two-volume, The Theory of Communicative Action. I made it clear to Kirkland that I was no Marxist, but he said that wouldn't bother him. (It did, immensely.) Although I had made clear to him that I'm a fluent German speaker, and already owned the work, he ordered me to buy the expensive English-language translation, which, of course, I was never going to open. So, it was important to him to pick my pocket, and put my money into that of his political ally.
One day in class, a student said something Kirkland disagreed with, so he responded, "So you support apartheid?" The flustered student stammered out, "No, no, of course not." End of "exchange." [There was no racial apsect whatsoever to the what he had initially said, or the student's objection. Everyone in that class was White.]
One day, I started to speak, "Well, I think..." He interrupted, "I don't care what you think!"
Another time, a student came to him after class, and unsuccessfully started asking him a question twice: "Considering the distinction between luxuries and necessities..."
"There is no distinction between luxuries and necessities."
"Considering the distinction between luxuries and necessities..."
"There is no distinction between luxuries and necessities."
The student said, "Thank you," and left.
I had sat in class silently that night (the week after he had shouted me down), and made a proposal: That I would no longer come to class, but would write a paper for him. He struck down my proposal, and so I never returned.
I stayed for half the semester. By my last class, the class was down to half. (Some may have left, in response to my arguing with him, but I'm sure most who left had gotten fed up with him. By the way, I checked his page at rate my professor. Numerous students criticized him for insulting and yelling at his students. Many also said that he was inarticulate, with some of them believing he was a foreigner, due to his "accent," though he would make students repeat themselves "again and again and again." Conversely, a couple of students said they "adore" him. My hunch is that they were black. Conversely, some students complained that he was an exceedingly petty grader. I havve no students were White.)
One thing I recall saying, which he despised was, "Philosophers are just another social group."
I would change one word about that statement today: Philosophy professors are just another social group. Philosophers are today almost non-existent among philosophy professors. Then again, that's true of most fields.
It was Frank Kirkland who led me to conclude that most tenured college professors today (meaning, circa 1988) are unelected political officials.

One philosophy professor (now emeritus) who stands outside this crowd is CCNY's Michael Levin, skewer of sacred cows in his books "Feminism and Freedom" (1987) and "Why Race Matters" (2011, 2016). ReplyDeleteShe was confirmed with three unneeded and unnecessary Republican votes, even after the dumber-than-the-Dumbass-Latina answer about not knowing what a woman is. Collins, Murkowski, and Romney. Even Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham got that one right and didn't get all squishy and bipartisan as they often do with Democrat nominees. Rand Paul got it right but he screwed up big time when he approved Gen. C. LGBTQ. Brown.

Republicans forget to look at their ID badge, which shows their name, picture AND PARTY. They forget to look--from the time they take office,to the day they leave.
