As I write this, Gayle Hoffman is clinging to life in Jamaica Hospital’s ICU. Who is Gayle Hoffman? “Nobody.” Somebody.
On March 26th, Gayle gained four new orifices she hadn’t bargained on. According to detectives in Far Rockaway’s 101 Precinct, the holes were courtesy of an off-duty, drunken NYPD rookie who’d just graduated from the Academy five days before.
Officer Rolando Hernandez has since been charged with attempted murder and assault. The shooting occurred on Beach 28th Street and Seagirt Avenue, Gayle’s territory. Rolando Hernandez allegedly pumped four 9 mm slugs from his service weapon into Gayle’s neck, lung, arm and leg. On the street, a girl who claimed she was with her insists that Hernandez shot Gayle after she stole $600 in cash from him. She’ll never “stroll” again, and it’s a miracle she’s still alive.
I hadn’t known her last name. We first met early last fall. Coming from the subway late, I was heading down Beach 20th Street. Two big, young [Hispanic] men who seemed to have ideas of “getting paid” were closing in on me.
Having gotten my nose broken fighting off a Mutt-and-Jeff team on the A train just a couple of weeks before and been arrested for “possession of a noxious substance” for spraying “Jeff” with tear gas, I was feeling war-weary. Seeing a woman standing at the bus stop on the other side of the street, by the corner of Seagirt, I crossed over. Strength in numbers, and all that.
Cute and short, pale, but well-nourished with dark hair, Gayle introduced herself: “You are talking to the most notorious prostitute in Far Rockaway.”
The next time I saw her, she was in a less affable mood. At 3 a.m., I escorted my building’s security guard to a stairwell door on the top floor, where he rousted her out of the sleep of the dead. She cursed him, as he ushered her out of the building. Homeless and strung out, she was just looking for a nook or cranny to crash in.
How could she be homeless? She who bragged, “I don’t even talk about a b--- j— for less than $20”? Neighbors said she was a crackhead who gave everything to her muse.
The next time I saw Gayle she was in my building during midday, when there’s no security. She apologized, “I’m sorry for the way I spoke to you.” It might have only been good policy for a potential John, but hey, how many people in this town have even that much business sense? I responded, “No sweat.” I hadn’t taken her curses personally.
The last time I saw her was on Everdell Avenue, during Chanukah. I was taking the short cut to the subway by the most notorious crackhouse in town (though not the only one on the block), which was later cleaned out in the big spring sweep. I’ve often been approached by ladies on Everdell, trudging even through blizzards to fill an unquenchable need.
Gayle wished me a “gut yomtov” in passing. A funny duck, when she spoke she looked not at me, but at a street guy who didn’t look too Jewish. So, funny duck that I am, I didn’t return the greeting.
Better late than never. Sorry, Gayle. Gut yomtov.

Another rumor I heard on the street in Far Rockaway, was that Rolando Hernandez had shot Gayle when she laughed at his inability to get it up, due to being extremely high. (I just confirmed this, via a newspaper report of her testimony at Rolando Hernandez’ trial.)
In any event, Hernandez was completely unfit to be a cop, and I’m sure had red flags that would have turned up during any sort of background check, like his street criminal friends he spent the days with between graduating from the police academy and shooting Gayle.
In March 1997, Rolando Hernandez was convicted of attempted murder, and sentenced to 20 years in prison. But he left Gayle a quadriplegic, unable to use any of her limbs.
She lived out her days in a nursing home, requiring constant care—diapering, being turned in bed, so as to protect her from bed sores, feeding, meds, everything.
She couldn’t even swallow, and required suction so that she wouldn’t choke to death on her own saliva or mucous.
Well, someone neglected her suction one night, while she was asleep. She choked to death.
I don’t know what it says on her death certificate, but Gayle’s cause of death was homicide, through Rolando Hernandez.
(I’ve known numerous murder victims over the years, whose cause of death didn’t match what it said on their toe tags. I’ve even kissed a couple goodbye on their foreheads.)
Queens DA Richard Brown spoke in 2004 of possibly re-opening Gayle’s case, and charging Hernandez with murder, but it was just talk. DA Brown let the matter drop, and the MSM forgot all about it. And the NYCPD got to maintain its pretty homicide stats.
Gayle’s parents had some money, and I read somewhere that they founded a charity in her name. (They sued the city of New York for letting Hernandez become a cop, but I have no idea how that suit panned out.)

Way down the page, we get rhetorical questions.

This is one of those pictures that led to the question, How was it possible that Edward G. Robinson was never up for an Oscar? He was even better than I remembered him.
This was also the picture where I first heard of "a Carthaginian peace." (No, not the "Morgenthau Plan," though that was close.)
Welles is Franz Kindler, a high-ranking Nazi who escaped with false identification and a new identitty, as a Swiss classics professor (alright, that takes a suspension of disbelief, but he couldn't be a Gerry or an Austrian).
Robinson is the fed who is doggedly tracking down Kindler, come hell or high water.
Young is Kindler's unwitting fiance.
Director of photography Russell Metty has all sorts of wonderful stuff going on, and he had some kind of wonderful career going on. Mixed in with all manner of pictures you never heard of were classics (Wellman's The Story of G.I. Joe, 1945), masterpieces (Bob Montgomery's Ride the Pink Horse, 1947), and Top 50 masterpieces (Hawks' Bringing Up Baby, 1938).
The Stranger has a clever, taut script by Anthony Veiller, who the same year scripted the Robert Siodmak masterpiece, The Killers.

I had to search and search for this video, even though I'd already watched it once, a few weeks ago. I punched in "false exonerations" both at google and duckduckgo, yet all they gave me were entries for "false convictions." Am I insinuating that the two aforementioned search engines are rigging results? No, I'm saying it! google and duckduckgo do not want readers to learn the truth about the false exoneration movement.
The main criminal gangs leading this movement are the "innocence projects" spread around the country, the most infamous of which is the so-called "innocence project" at northwestern university's Medill school of journalism in Evanston, illinois. This gang was founded by professor David Protess (1946-) in 1999. Due to the Protess scandal, northwestern fired Protess, while allowing him to "retire" (2011), and re-branded his gang the "Medill justice project."
Note that the "innocence projects" are only interessted in convicts who are guilty as hell.
Roberta Glass and "Nadia" maintain that these gangs keep going through the profit motive. The criminal court part does not earn them money, but it is inseparable from the civil court part, in which after they get killers' murder convictions overturned, they sue, in order to get the murderers and their lawyers windfalls to the tune of millions of dollars.
I was able to find this through the name Martin Preib, whose book Crooked City I'd bought a couple of years ago (but have yet to read more than a few pages of). I recently caught an interview by Roberta Glass of Preib, and so I found her through him.

Film Noir Guide: “Palance, a popular Hollywood star, wants to quit the business to save his crumbling marriage to Lupino, but ruthless producer Steiger and his henchman Corey blackmail him into signing a new seven-year contract. With a possible jail sentence hanging over Palance’s head if it becomes known that the studio P.R. man (Langton) took the blame for his drunk driving accident, which killed a young girl the actor gives in to Steiger’s demands.”
“Lupino, who’s considering running off with Palance’s best friend (Addy), isn’t thrilled with the prospect of seven more years in Tinseltown. Complicating matters, a dipso bit player (Winters), who was in the car with Palance on the night of the accident, has been babbling about the cover-up. When Corey decides that she should be shut up for good, the horrified actor feels he must take a stand.”

N.S.: I saw this picture over 50 years ago, and all I can remember of it is the ruthless studio mogul played by Rod Steiger, and yet I heartily recommend it. Why? It was helmed by Robert Aldrich, and has a brilliant cast.
Aldrich’s movies (Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte, The Dirty Dozen, The Longest Yard, etc.) were characterized by brutality and intelligence. The story goes that as he lay on his death bed, when one of his friends asked, “Can we get you anything, Bob?,” he responded, “A good script.” He worked frequently with Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine and, late in his career, Burt Reynolds.
Rod Steiger’s studio mogul, as I remember him, mixed with voluminous reading on the topic, is generic. However, people who have read very little on the topic, will simply project their personal hatreds on him. The other day, I visited an old web page from a movie blog, where one such denizen cursed the memory of MGM founder Louis B. Mayer. Others will curse Columbia co-founder Harry Cohn. Early in her movie career, she delivered a series of brilliant supporting performances (e.g., Side Street, 1949). Although she got the role as the wife on The Danny Thomas Show, which fetched her three Emmy nominations, she quit after three years, complaining that there was nothing for her to do on the show. For several years thereafter, she was a busy TV guest star. And then her world fell in. Although she was still relatively young, her health completely collapsed, with one physical complaint after another, ending with death from esophageal cancer at the age of 54 (1923-1977).
Everett Sloane is most famous as one of the triumvirate who all should have been up for Best Supporting Actor for Citizen Kane (1941)—King Cotten, George Colouris, and Sloane—none of whom was nominated. In middle age, with his hearing failing him, Sloane committed suicide.

Film Noir Guide: “Palance, a popular Hollywood star, wants to quit the business to save his crumbling marriage to Lupino, but ruthless producer Steiger and his henchman Corey blackmail him into signing a new seven-year contract. With a possible jail sentence hanging over Palance’s head if it becomes known that the studio P.R. man (Langton) took the blame for his drunk driving accident, which killed a young girl the actor gives in to Steiger’s demands.”
“Lupino, who’s considering running off with Palance’s best friend (Addy), isn’t thrilled with the prospect of seven more years in Tinseltown. Complicating matters, a dipso bit player (Winters), who was in the car with Palance on the night of the accident, has been babbling about the cover-up. When Corey decides that she should be shut up for good, the horrified actor feels he must take a stand.”
“Hagen plays Langton’s libidinous wife, who can’t resist Palance, and Sloane is the actor’s sympathetic agent. Steiger gives his usual boisterous but enjoyable performance, and Palance is so compelling that noir icon Lupino is hardly noticeable as his indecisive wife.”
“Based on the play by Clifford Odets, The Big Knife presents a grim look at the darker (albeit fictional) side of Hollywood life. The film wasn’t a big hit with audiences, who couldn’t drum up much sympathy for the pathetic life of an alcoholic, millionaire actor living in a Bel Air mansion. They also had difficulty accepting the hard-featured Palance as a sex symbol adored by millions of women.”
N.S.: I saw this picture over 50 years ago, and all I can remember of it is the ruthless studio mogul played by Rod Steiger, and yet I heartily recommend it. Why? It was helmed by Robert Aldrich, and has a brilliant cast.
Aldrich’s movies (Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte, The Dirty Dozen, The Longest Yard, etc.) were characterized by brutality and intelligence. The story goes that as he lay on his death bed, when one of his friends asked, “Can we get you anything, Bob?,” he responded, “A good script.” He worked frequently with Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine and, late in his career, Burt Reynolds.
Rod Steiger’s studio mogul, as I remember him, mixed with voluminous reading on the topic, is generic. However, people who have read very little on the topic, will simply project their personal hatreds on him. The other day, I visited an old web page from a movie blog, where one such denizen cursed the memory of MGM founder Louis B. Mayer. Others will curse Columbia co-founder Harry Cohn. "People are really tying Bidenomics and their perception of the economy to the inflation rate," said Matt Monday of Morning Consult, in a new Bloomberg story titled, "Biden's gains against Trump vanish against deep economic pessimism, poll shows." It's the latest entrant in an intensifying campaign to describe voters, especially in key electoral swing states, as morons and partisan haters who'll deny reality itself out of political spite.
This campaign has been weirdly perverse in its mockery. Seattle Times cartoonist David Horsey recently tossed off a visual of the reality-denying swing voter, rendering him as a pudgy, confused hominid in the mode of Monty Python's duncelike Gumbys. Having negative feelings about "the best performing [economy] in the world" is equivalent to denying who won the Super Bowl:

When the Wall Street Journal a few weeks ago ran "What's Wrong With the Economy? It's You, Not the Data," I thought the "It's not me, it's you" framing had to be ironic, a spoof of these increasingly numerous "perception of the economy" pieces. Nope:

Noting that 74% of respondents in a recent poll said they felt inflation in the "past year" was going in the wrong direction, author Greg Ip noted flatly "it's not true," adding:
I'm not stating an opinion. This isn't something on which reasonable people can disagree. If hard economic data count for anything, we can say unambiguously that inflation has moved in the right direction in the past year.
Ip might be technically right about the last year of inflation, but I'm not sure how many finance writers want to be in the business of deciding who belongs in the "reasonable people" club, given the last twenty years of unpunished thievery on Wall Street.
