I don't know this man and what his beliefs are, but having attended college in New Mexico and having worked there--including for an Hispanic firm, I know that pride in Hispanic historical figures like the Conquistadors is NOT necessarily anti-American. Just like Italian Americans being proud of Columbus, New Mexican Hispanics are proud of their famous explorers. The New Mexico State Fair had an Indian Village and a Spanish Village. An illustrator from outside New Mexico was drawing an illustration for the Spanish Village in which he had a Mexican in a big sombrero snoozing on the steps. I warned him that New Mexico Hispanics would be furious in being portrayed as Mexicans. Some Hispanic employees confirmed what I said and the illustration was changed to show a Spaniard in armor instead of a Mexican. One of the surest ways to make a northern New Mexican angry is to call him or her a Mexican. They see themselves as descendants of the Conquistadors and settlers from Spain--not Mexicans. Of course in Southern New Mexico where the population was sparse because of the Apaches--and after American defeated the Apaches, Mexicans poured in--you are apt to find different attitudes.

ReplyDeleteIs that after 1 or 2 bottles of tequila? The blacks think they're from royalty too, lol.Whites who came here from Europe claimed nothing of the sort--my grandparents never beat their chests--they were just hard workers.Humility is a word that's never used to describe Mex--or blacks.

The man shot was an American Indian? The shooter is Castilian Spanish?
