Voices of Innocence and Experience: Three Different Versions of “You’ll Never Know,” by Barbara Streisand and… Barbra Streisand

Re-posted by Nicholas Stix

In 1955, when Barbara Joan Streisand was 13, she cut a demo of the war-time standard, “You’ll Never Know.” Over 30 years later, she got the idea of singing it again, and weaving the two recordings into a duet with herself. It sounds vain and narcissistic as all get out, and it is, not to mention risky, and yet it worked gloriously.

Barbra Streisand - "You'll Never Know" (from Just for the Record) (Audio)

This is the 1955 version that opens the disc 1 of the four-record box set. Streisand gave it a scratchy sound, to emphasize its age.

The Duet

This is the version that ends the box set (disc 4), which she recorded in 1988.

I tried to match the video from the 1988 recording sessions with the CD audio.

[The hand motions are Streisand directing the orchestra, as she sings.]
