Phil Mushnick on mlb, espn, etc.

I liked his intro with Jean Shepherd, a fabulous raconteur I used to listen to on WOR in the early '60s.

If the post continues to crawl to the left, Mushnick will be the first columnist to go.

N.S.: Jean Shepherd had a wonderful, folksy voice and style, and told stories of growing up in Hammond, Indiana, like the ones that became the classic Christmas movie, A Christmas Story.

Phil Mushnick quotes Shepherd saying, “In God we trust. All others pay cash.”

When I was growing up in Long Beach, NY, a retired, Irish, New York City copper named Charlie Jacobi, who was a reformed drunk, bought the deli in the Long Beach LIRR station. Charlie posted a hand-written, cardboard box sign over the counter that read, “In God we trust. All others pay cash. Credit: See our credit department on the fourth floor [there wasn't even a second floor!]. Checks: Checks will only be cashed for customers over 65, accompanied by both parents.”

[In those days, the average life expectancy for an American man was only 68.]

I have no doubt that Charlie was a Jean Shepherd fan.

Charlie's son, Jimmy, was the same age as me. Jimmy was a scrawny, young drunk, about six inches taller than me. We had a famous lunch-break brawl during summer school following the ninth grade, in 1973. I guarantee you that we both remember that fight, and each of us will tell you that he won!

"Life expectancy was around 68."

All I can surmise,is that at John Jay college, the liberals would infer that having blacks take over our cities has increased the country's life expectancy almost 15 years--and they'd believe it too.

There's no doubt, life expectancy WITH negroes living nearby and without,is at least a two decade difference.
