KOOZ" LOSES,GENTRY DOESN'T GO GENTLY AND WEIS DOESN'T SUFFICE--METS GET SWEPT IN COORS FIELD TO BREAK THE MAJOR LEAGUE RECORD FOR CONSECUTIVE LOSSES OF 23 (HELD BY THE PHILLIES)
ReplyDeleteThe weekend experiment by Mets' GM,Brodie Van Wagenen,to use four available 1969 "Miracle Mets" alumni as managers,in an attempt to coax a first win of the season out of his team--in Coors Field--failed miserably as Cleon Jones,Jerry Koosman,Gary Gentry and Al Weis all joined the cast of "one day and out" skippers in 2020.
Jones defeat was described earlier and Jerry Koosman,one half of the 'Tom and Jerry" Mets' duo of Seaver and Koosman,tried his luck on Friday night to no avail.
Koosman's intriguing idea was to play all left handers,meaning Pete Alonso was benched,replaced by little used Dominic Smith.Steve Matz took to the hill for "Kooz" against Rockies starter,German Marquez in the second game of the series.Koosman may have had lefty intuition,as the main impetus in his decision-making with tonight's line-up,but the Rockies batting average against lefty starting pitchers this year was a league leading .348,headed into the evening's contest--and they raised that up considerably with an onslaught of extra-base power,including 5 HRs,8 doubles and two triples in an 18-2 pounding.
Of course,"Kooz" was promptly excused.
Game three on Saturday--an afternoon tilt--brought the former number three starter on the '69 Mets,Gary Gentry, into the dugout for a chance at victory.Alas,it was not to be,as although the Mets had their bats smoking in the sunny,windy conditions,so did Colorado,who outscored the Mets 24-22 to push the Mets' losing streak to 24--breaking the all time record--of 23--set by the Phillies in 1961--but the Mets did go down fighting.Cano,Alonzo and Cespedes each had 4 RBIs--not enough to counter Nolan Arenado's 4 HRs and 13 RBIs--which broke the record of most runs batted in,in one game,posted by Jim Bottomley in 1924 and Mark Whiten in 1993--by one RBI.
Al Weis was handed the reins for Sunday's finale and the Rockies handed the diminutive former second baseman a 4-1 loss--which seemed too abnormally normal of a game--by this season's standards anyways.Noah Snydergaard pitched well in his 7 innings,leaving with the game tied at 1.Jeurys Familia
gave up 2 walks and another Arenado four bagger to seal the Mets' fate in this one.
GM Van Wagenen,at the post game press conference,wondered out loud,that if everything he's doing is wrong,maybe he should hire the guy that was famous for being wrong-- "Seinfeld's",George Costanza--(Jason Alexander)as manager of the team.
Costanza,a former assistant to George Steinbrenner,said no--for now--doing the opposite of what his instincts told him.
Van Wagenen's second choice DID accept the job--- announced to be none other than President Donald Trump,who said,via satellite from the Oval Office,"I can make the Mets Great Again."
Game time is 1030pm in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

Knuckleball pitchers are a rarity? Never were many of them anyhow? But can cause problems for even the best of batters.
