MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The mother of two children who died after they were left alone in a house that caught fire was indicted Tuesday night.
Melodia Dunn was charged with two counts of reckless homicide and two counts of child neglect in the death of LaDareon Dunn, 3, and his brother Catereon, 2. Both boys were trapped inside after fire broke out in their Effie Road duplex on October 19th.
The first two counts of the indictment allege Dunn "did unlawfully and knowingly, other than by accidental means, neglect or endanger" Ladereon Dunn and Cartareon Dunn. The third and fourth counts say Dunn "did unlawfully and recklessly kill" her two children.
Authorities arrived to rescue the two small children after the fire broke out, but it was too late. LaDareon died moments after arriving at the hospital, while Catereon lost his life several days later in the intensive care unit.
"We're going to do what we can to hold her accountable under our state laws," District Attorney Bill Gibbons said Wednesday. "The person who had an obligation to be responsible for the children was the mother."
The case will likely revolve around two questions: What was Dunn thinking when she left her children in the house, and was she in her right mind?
"That may be something that her lawyers will raise," Gibbons said. "We'll just have to see."
Dunn's attorney, Mike Working, said his client remains devastated by the death of two of her children.
"Obviously she is extremely upset and extremely emotional, as any mother would be," he said.
Dunn is being held in the Shelby County Jail on $250,000 bond. An arraignment date has not been set.

Nothing pisses me off more than this. The father of those children should be held accountable too! Men! If your baby momma is unfit to care for your children, fight for them! The father of those children obviously doesn't care, he's probably put there making more babies with unstable women... Please women don't entertain mother fkkkkkrs like him and men raise your mfkn standards!!!!
