Subject: Another Killer Grandson--of a Civil Rights Icon

In June 1997 Betty Shabazz, Malcolm X's widow, was killed by her 12-year-old grandson Malcolm Shabazz, who set her apartment on fire. He was in her custody because his mother, Qubila Shabazz, had been arrested for trying to hire a hit man to assassinate Louis Farrakhan (allegedly to avenge the 1965 shooting of her father some thirty-two years earlier.) Both perps received kid-gloves treatment: Malcolm got 18 months in juvenile detention for arson and manslaughter, while Qubilah, according to, Wikipedia:

"accepted a plea agreement with respect to the charges, in which she maintained her innocence but accepted responsibility for her actions [an oxymoron, no?]. Under the terms of the agreement, she was required to undergo psychological counseling and treatment for drug and alcohol abuse for a two-year period in order to avoid a prison sentence. For the duration of her treatment, Qubilah's ten-year-old son, Malcolm, was sent to live with Shabazz at her apartment in Yonkers, New York."

That arrangement didn't work out too well.

In later life Malcolm Shabazz was arrested many times and died in 2013, aged 28 in Mexico City: he was beaten to death, supposedly over a $1200 bar tab. The two men arrested for it served several years before being released in 2020 "for lack of evidence." Go figure.

  1. And that's nig*ers for you. Famous ones act no better than obscure ones.
