Thomas Jefferson was a prolific, some 19,000 letters, and artful writer. Writing letters, Col. Holowchak asserts, could be drudgery, especially late in his life, but Jefferson considered it a civic duty to answer all letters that needed an answer. Sound republican government demanded civil communications between citizens and shared information for governmental efficiency. Moral decently too was a large factor.
