TCM’s Film Noir of the Week Saturday Night-Sunday Morning at 12:45 and 10 a.m. ET is Jeanne Pierre Melville’s Le Deuxieme (1966), The Second Wind.

Eddie Muller chooses another French film. It runs over two-and-a-half hours.

An escaped con becomes involved with a double-crossing gang planning to steal two tons of gold from an armored truck.

N.S.: At 31 words, that may represent a new standard in brevity for David.

Well, since the whole misbegotten notion of “film noir” was coined by some pretentious frenchman (was I being redundant there?), I say, Why not?

  1. I've never seen this film or heard of it. I have seen some of Melville's other works on TCM.

  2. TCM's Film Noir of the Week Saturday Night-Sunday Morning at Midnight and 10 a.m. ET is Joseph H. Lewis' The big Combo (1955) with Cornel Wilde, Richard Conte, Brian Donlevy, Jean Wallace, Lee Van Cleef, Earl Holliman, Helene Stanton.

Film Noir Guide: "A police lieutenant (Wilde), obsessed with arresting Conte, the head of a local mob called simply 'the organization,' pines for Conte's moll (Wallace). But it's burlesque star Stanton he turns to when he needs some TLC. Wallace, meanwhile, seemingly tormented with guilt about her lustful feelings for Conte, makes a feeble attempt at suicide.

"Two hit men roommates (Van Cleef and Holliman) seem to be romantically involved with each other, while Donlevy, once Conte's boss but now his hearing-impaired underling, makes the mistake of trying to take over.

"With its talented cast and top-notch direction, the sexy and violent Combo is an excellent noir choice for fans who enjoy the films of Quentin Tarantino.

David in TN: The Big Combo is a good film even when you have no use for Tarantino.
