TCM’s Film Noir of the Week Saturday Night-Sunday Morning at 12:30 and 10 a.m. ET is Jerry Hopper’s Naked Alibi (1954), with Sterling Hayden, Gloria Grahame, Gene Barry, Marcia Henderson and Don Haggerty.
Film Noir Guide: “Somebody has killed three detectives, and police chief Hayden suspects a baker (Barry) who threatened one of the cops after they had arrested him for being drunk and disorderly. Determined to prove Barry’s guilt, Hayden gets rough with the baker and is later fired for police brutality. Hayden and a former colleague (Haggerty) begin following the suspect, hoping he will lead them to the murder weapon.
“Unable to take the pressure, Barry leaves his wife (Henderson) and baby and flees to a Mexican border town, where a sexy cantina singer (noir icon Grahame) has been waiting for him. Guilty of adultery, yes, but is Barry the vicious cop-killer? Despite Barry’s tendency to overact, the film works well.”
