"african founders, American liberty"
review of a new David Hackett Fischer book, by Allen Guelzo
Without being at all an expert, I'm dubious about Guelzo's take that africans brought anything important to the construction of American political institutions.
According to what I read from this Fisher, the colored did not have it all that bad. That seems to be the message I get from the review. They were treated even as slaves with a degree of respect? Not worked to death on the plantations as we are led to believe.
ReplyDeleteBut hardly did they contribute a whole lot if anything to the concept of American liberty which used the rights of the Englishman as the basis.
