I was just going through a bunch of Johnny Carson (1925-2005) videos, searching for a documentary that, it turns out, you have to subscribe to my favorite service, Netflix, in order to view. In one over one-hour long compilation, Johnny does an intro to a clip that only lasted a minute or two. He said Ed (1923-2009) had been at a luncheon that day for an advertisers’ organization, and had had a grand old time.
So, they roll the clip, and Ed is plastered, and doing something he normally would never do: Criticize Johnny! Every time Johnny opened his mouth, Ed attacked and corrected him. Talk about, “In vino veritas”!
Meanwhile, Johnny is making sidelong glances to the cameramen, leaving no doubt that he would like nothing so much as to wring Ed’s neck.
At one point, pointing to the back, Johnny asks Ed, “If you’d like an Army cot for a little nappy-poo?”
