N.S.: I am convinced that Hollywood performers’ agents whisper in their ears to make these stupid, pc pronouncements.
Back during the studio system, studio publicists would tell stars where to appear and when, and script what they would say. Meanwhile, the studios would restrict access to the press, and if the latter wanted to get any rhythm, they had to play ball. Agents also had very little power under the studio system.
Some particularly vain stars (e.g., Fran Sinatra) deeply resented this system, and yearned to be free of it. (The moguls rightfully considered most stars to be like children, in their willfulness.) And then they got their freedom, good and hard, and hated that, too. With no studio to control things, Sinatra and Ava Gardner got no privacy, and Sinatra went around punching out photographers, left and right.
Sinatra would later claim to be “manic-depressive”; I say his sin was hubris.
When the U.S. Supreme Court broke up the studio system, beginning in 1948, with United States v. Paramount, it left power vacuums, which were ultimately filled by TV, agents, and the press.
I believe that today’s stars’ (and white baseball players’) agents tell them, “You’ve got to have a cause.” And it’s got to be stupid and venal. Look at stars’ bio pages at IMDB.com. They can’t all be such vicious imbeciles… can they?
But does the public even deserve better? After all, they continue to stuff these degenerates’ pockets with filthy lucre, no matter how much the latter insult them, their way of life, and their nation.
