The oppressiveness of mathematics
The oppressiveness of mathematics
AOF: Like so much happening in our constantly devolving civilization, this is a crime against the American future:
N.S.: Unfortunately, John Hinderaker backs off from identifying the most important factor in learning mathematics, physics, etc.: I.Q. Northeast Asian kids aren't mastering those subjects, anymore than white kids are, through hard work, but through the application of genetically-endowed intelligence. No I.Q., no shirty!
Actually, this politicization of the teaching of math has been going on for many years. Every few years, a white woman will get into trouble in a national "scandal," for weaving slavery into a math class. The scandal is always mindless, because nobody puts the incident into its true context, i.e., that the "educator" has been trained for years, in racial socialist teachers ed schools and professional seminars to do exactly what she did. Why, then, was she nationally vilified? Because she's white! Because of the color of her skin, she may be vilified at any time, for any reason.
Hardworking, high-I.Q. American kids who were honor roll students throughout high school in AP STEM classes are increasingly struggling to compete in college with Red Chinese students who grew up in a society that still promotes meritocracy, because the Americans' high school AP classes were dumbed down, in order to make them easier for the dunces who are the usual suspects, and who didn't belong there.
America's meritocracy was murdered by Congress and LBJ in 1964, when the former passed the National Quotas Act (aka the U.S. Civil Rights Act), and the latter signed it into law. Note that this was not a case of the road to hell being paved with good intentions. Both parties knew exactly what they were doing. Critics warned that the bill was a quota law, to which Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey III responded, that if it turned out that way, he would eat the law on the Senate floor. The law proved to be a quota law, yet Hubie went to his grave hungry.
MATH–IT'S OPPRESSIVE!
The Seattle public schools have developed a new "ethnic studies" curriculum that tells students that mathematics is a tool of oppression. Sure, some of us thought that back in junior high school, especially when we didn't get around to doing our homework. But to have this view endorsed by the schools is remarkable. Robby Soave reports at Reason:
The [Seattle public school] district has proposed a new social justice-infused curriculum that would focus on "power and oppression" and "history of resistance and liberation" within the field of mathematics. The curriculum isn't mandatory, but provides a resource for teachers who want to introduce ethnic studies into the classroom vis a vis math.
Why, exactly, would you introduce "ethnic studies" into mathematics? This is from Education Week:
If adopted, its ideas will be included in existing math classes as part of the district's broader effort to infuse ethnic studies into all subjects across the K-12 spectrum.
Again: why would a school district do this, unless it is deliberately trying to foment ethnic division? The rot, sadly, is not confined to Seattle:
"Seattle is definitely on the forefront with this," said Robert Q. Berry III, the president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. "What they're doing follows the line of work we hope we can move forward as we think about the history of math and who contributes to that, and also about deepening students' connection with identity and agency."
Why is it the mission of the public schools to "deepen students' connection with identity and agency"? If "identity" means ethnic identity, which I understand it does, I would think the public schools should be trying to do the opposite.
Soave points out that the "ethnic studies" curriculum is absurdly left-wing:
The guidance also includes some extremely political, simplistic talking points that might be popular among activist academics but are in reality somewhat dubious. This is verbatim from the proposal: Students will be able to "identify the inherent inequities of the standardized testing system used to oppress and marginalize people and communities of color"…
Let's stop here. Ability to do math transcends race and other irrelevant factors. Facility at mathematics, earned through many hours of hard labor, has allowed countless Asian-Americans to prosper, to the point where Asian-American incomes are now, on the average, considerably higher than white incomes. Why were all these "people of color" not "oppressed" or "marginalized" by mathematics? Because they did their homework and studied for tests.
…"explain how math has been used to exploit natural resources," and "explain how math dictates economic oppression."
Is this some kind of joke? People this stupid shouldn't be teaching math, or any other subject.
There is not much more to say, except to note that the attack on competence can't stop with mathematics. If math is oppressive, so are physics, chemistry, biology and every other subject that requires hard study to master objective reality. God help us when our structural engineers are products of an educational system that considers knowledge of mathematics to be a symptom of "oppression."
And to be proficient in physics class at least at the college or university level you must learn calculus first and be able to apply to physics problems.
ReplyDeleteYou cannot also understand the math systems of the Aztec, the Maya, the Arab, the Indian unless you master your own math system first. You have no basis for comparison.
Stanford doing the same thing but with physics. Too many POC fail the course [mandatory?].
ReplyDeleteWhen a very elite school does something lie that you know something is very wrong.
YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS SH*T UP--PUMPKINS ARE NOW RACIST
ReplyDeleteNYACK, N.Y. (AP) — Bed Bath & Beyond has removed pumpkins painted black with white mouths following complaints they were offensive because they resembled blackface.
News 12-Westchester reports the black pumpkins were placed on a porch outside a law firm in Nyack, New York, as part of a Halloween display. They were removed less than 48 hours later after some community members complained.
Law firm partner Mary Marzolla says the pumpkins were never meant to offend anyone and the firm represents people “of all colors and faiths.”
Associate Alak Shah says the pumpkins did not personally offend him, but since it did offend someone the firm took them down.
Bed Bath & Beyond apologized, saying any offense was unintentional and that it “immediately removed” the pumpkins from sale.
GRA:Next complaint will be from SJW blacks against whites--who have snowmen in their yards, which are getting a little grey from pollution---BLACKFACE!!!
Don't forget the Ash Wednesday ceremony too--when churchgoers receive ashes on their foreheads---BLACKFACE!!!!
But PUMPKINS--please--and BB&B caves in,as does the lawfirm.
"JUST SAY NO."

A LIST OF "RACIST" THINGS--ACCORDING TO BLACKS
ReplyDeleteMath is racist,so is spelling(if blacks can't do either, must be racist).History is VERY racist--vocabulary is indubitably racist.Talking intelligently is quite racist.Going to school is racist and don't forget about holding a job--that's racist too.
Being responsible is racist(tied with being respectful to others--that's extremely racist behavior).
Following the law?Yup--racist.
Getting arrested?DAMN racist.
Giving info to police about lawbreakers is so damn racist.
Telling the truth--racist.
Why ARE all these things racist? That's because these are traits that most white people strive for and are accomplished at--while blacks are mostly incapable of mastering.
Guess what,because I just told the truth--I'm a racist!
P.S.Black painted pumpkins are racist too (see story elsewhere)if whites are the ones setting them outside.

ReplyDeleteLet's play "Guess the Race"! Oh wait, you're already guessing black? Then you win! OK, here we go: Woman shoved into a train in Brooklyn subway. Guess who did it? Yup, a negro, of course. Check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hMu1yrXtbI
Notice it's being described as a "random" attack: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/man-randomly-pushes-woman-into-subway-car-in-brooklyn/ar-AAJin7N
It appears the negro was having a conflict with someone else, probably another negro and he shoved the woman to show how "tough" he was. The woman did not report the attack to the police, she might be a liberal black crime apologist. She was actually fortunate the train was there, if she went over the edge she probably would have been more seriously injured or worse if a train was pulling in.
"Every few years, a white woman will get into trouble in a national "scandal," for weaving slavery into a math class. "
