NOW the consideration will be given to retry, offer a generous plea bargain, etc. Plead guilty to 3rd degree murder, given a five year sentence, the bad guy has already spent two years behind bars, he needs to serve only six months more, etc. That sorta stuff.
The vote was seven Guilty, five Not Guilty. All five white jurors voted guilty plus two blacks. The other five black jurors voted not guilty.
The foreman (or somebody) supposedly thought this merited a "Not Guilty" verdict. Without polling the jury (usually just a ritual) Tellis would have been acquitted.
Tonight, Ashleigh Banfield on HLN said the case was a "stinker" that shouldn't have been brought. Banfield thought Tellis "had an alibi." Oh, he did? When? The defense called no witnesses at all.
She wailed about the racial split "I hate to see it." But thought the white jurors all voting guilty was a bad thing.
Ashleigh did express a pro forma sympathy for the victim and her family.
