This article does not do justice to this monster. And yet, although she spent four-and-a-half years in Brazilian and Mexican prisons awaiting trial, she has, as far as I’ve been able to determine, never been convicted of any crimes. Expect to hear Trevi's alleged victim charge her, her husband, and others with sex slavery and rape.
I could not find any mug shots of Gloria Trevi, or any of her associates.
"Mexican pop singer Gloria Trevi leaves the police station in Cruziro, Brasilia Brazil Thursday June 25, 2002." [No explanation given, but she'd been under arrest, and would soon be re-arrested. Note that the slavish photographer made the pic look like an occasion for celebration. Never mind that Trevi had been charged with turning a group of young girls into sex slaves, and allegedly raped them with her husband of the time.]

Mexican pop singer Gloria Trevi, her husband and another individual are accused of underpaying their former “domestic servant” and violating human trafficking laws in a lawsuit filed Tuesday in a federal court in South Texas.
The lawsuit alleges pop star Trevi, her husband Armando Gomez and an Amelia Gomez — whose relationship to the family is not identified in the suit — violated Maria DeJesus Galeana Sanchez’s rights under federal labor and human trafficking laws, according to court documents obtained by mySA.com.

The defendant is seeking unpaid wages, actual and punitive damages, as well coverage of court costs and attorney fees.
Trevi, whose full name is Gloria de los Ángeles Treviño Ruiz, married Armando Gomez, also her defense lawyer, in 2009 and moved to McAllen. Their former “domestic servant” now lives in Harlingen, the suit said.
The suit continues by alleging that the defendants obtained a visa for their employee to come and work in the United States and work for them. Galeana Sanchez, who is being represented by a San Antonio lawyer, worked for them from October 2013 until April 2014.
"Gloria Trevi regresa como su alter ego masculino Mr. Trevi cantando los temas que usaría para conquistar a una mujer." [Something about Gloria Trevi as her alter ego, Mr. Trevi, singing about sexual conquests of women. Why an American daily newspaper would run Spanish-language photo captions is also not explained.]
She alleges in the case that they paid her 5,000 pesos bi-weekly.
The value of the U.S. dollar in April 2014 was about 13 pesos, which averages out to about $385 per bi-weekly paycheck, based on those money rates.
The amount she was allegedly being paid is far less than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. That money was placed into a Mexican bank account, the suit said.

The former employee also claims in the suit she worked about 120 hours per week throughout her employment, and was not fully compensated for all the hours she worked.
Had she been paid the minimum wage, she would have been making $1,740 based on how many hours she reports she worked.
“Plaintiff was brought to the United States under false promises of fair pay and humane treatment … Defendants knowingly and willingly deceived and lured Plaintiff,” the suit states regarding the violation of the TVPRA.
“Defendants engaged Plaintiff in human trafficking in violation of the TVPRA, including forced labor and involuntary servitude, peonage, and slavery.”
The suit also claims the defendants took the servant’s passport in order to prevent her from proving her legal status and/or to prohibit her from moving or traveling away from the area.
"Gloria Trevi escogió para su nuevo disco temas que ella le gustaría que le cantaran para seducirla como Perdóname, Como yo te amo, Y ahora quién, Cama y mesa, El amor después del amor, Desahogo, Que muera el amor, Te quiero y Las pequeñas cosas."

ReplyDeleteSounds like there could be some validity behind this case of worker exploitation, I really don't know for sure but these kind of lawsuits seem to be more and more common, I'm wondering if suing an employer for abuse isn't the latino version of the ghetto lottery, it would be ridiculously easy to allow yourself, as a domestic worker, to place yourself in a position where your employer could be seen as taking advantage of you, then viola! A lawsuit and a big payoff! I don't know if that's true, just thinking out loud...

Accused Thief Says The Stupidest Thing Possible To Arresting Officers
ReplyDeleteAfter being arrested Friday for stealing items from a jeweler in a Florida mall, Prolancia Aquila Turner, 26, was pissed.
Not at herself, of course, for hiding earrings valued at $12.50 in the waistband of her pants.
Instead, the “crying and angry” Turner, 26, was miffed because, as she told police, “Everyone steals from this store. Why are you picking on me?”
