ReplyDeleteDETROIT, MI - The Wayne County Medical Examiner has identified the adult body found in a burned home on Detroit's east side as Heidi Walker.
ReplyDeleteWalker, 38, is the mother of 4-year-old Savannah Walker, who was the subject of an Amber Alert early Saturday morning. Her body was found at a partially burned house on the 4700 block Lakeview Street along with the body of a child, which has yet to be identified.
Although police have not yet positively identified the child's body, the Amber Alert for Savannah Walker was cancelled Monday morning.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig told reporters Monday that Marcus Hightower, 33, is considered a suspect.
Heidi and Savannah Walker were last seen with Hightower in Detroit at a home on Cadillac Boulevard, before an Amber Alert was sent at about 2 a.m. Saturday.
Less than four hours later, the bodies of a female and a child were found in the partially burned, vacant house on Lakeview, about three miles from the Cadillac Boulevard address listed in the alert.
Hightower has been on parole for a felony assault charge, and his parole has been set to end in September.
He turned himself in to police Sunday after he was named a person of interest in the Walkers' disappearance. Craig said Hightower is still in custody.
Craig also said he spoke with an adult daughter of Heidi Walker, who told him that Hightower and Walker had been in a sometimes-violent relationship.
"According to the older child ... there were domestic violence instances between the suspect and the victim," Craig said.
Walker and Savannah were first reported missing on Tuesday, Feb. 16, in Livingston County. Walker's adult daughter went to the police with "sketchy" information that her mother might be dead, according to the county sheriff and undersheriff. A deputy did some work on her case, including tracking Walker's cell phone to Detroit, and then recommended she contact authorities with jurisdiction, such as the state or Detroit police.
Craig said Monday he could not yet say how the victims had been killed.
