Basil Poledouris’ Score to Lonesome Dove, the Masterpiece Miniseries Based on Larry McMurtry’s Epic Novel; Plus, a John Wayne Mystery

By Nicholas Stix

At youtube, David Govett commented:

Music composed by Basil Poledouris (August 21, 1945 – November 8, 2006), a Greek-American music composer who concentrated on the scores for films and television shows. Basil dies of cancer at 61. Damn you, cancer.

According to Scott Eyman’s grand John Wayne biography, John Wayne: The Life and Legend, Larry McMurtry initially came up with Lonesome Dove during the early 1970s as a script entitled, The Streets of Laredo, for a movie to be directed by Peter Bogdanovich, and to star John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, and Henry Fonda. Wayne would have played Gus McCrae, Stewart would have played Woodrow Call, which would have left Fonda to play Jake Spoon. Wayne didn’t like the role McMurtry’d written for him, and “Once he passed on a project, it stayed passed” (Eyman).
