For the Super Bowl, Some Ad Companies Took the Day Off from Bashing the Guys Who Make the World Work: White Dads

Re-posted by Nicholas Stix

One nameless feminist on the advertising watch at Lehigh Valley Live loved all the pc ads, especially the one in which a terrified white woman calls 911, because her white boyfriend or husband just beat her, is still nearby, and she has to act like she’s calling for pizza delivery, while the patient, wise black man on the other end figures out what to do to rescue her. But she/he/it (s/h/it) was upset about that some Super Bowl commercials were dad-friendly.

Lehigh Valley Live: “Toyota - My Bold Dad Toyota joins the slew of brands paying tribute to fathers: ‘Being a dad is a choice. One that will make a wonderful human being who will make their own choices someday.’”

“With Dad”: Nissan 2015 Super Bowl Commercial

Lehigh Valley Live: “Nissan - #withdad Another ad pandering to fathers is Nissan, with its first Super Bowl spot in 18 years -- featuring Harry Chapin's ‘Cat's in the Cradle.’”

N.S.: Some older viewers who knew the Harry Chapin song this spot uses, “Cat’s in the Cradle,” were confused and upset by this commercial. The song is about a dad who is a great provider, but who never spends time with his son, and the son grows up to be the same way, and later never spends time with his dad.

As a dad, I like the ad's spin better, and it was great seeing Aidan Quinn, whom I hadn't seen in years. Either that, or one of the actors who portrayed the father is a dead ringer for Quinn, at least as he looked in his thirties.

#withdad follows the struggles of a hardworking and close-knit family striving for togetherness across the years.

As part of our #withdad campaign, Nissan will donate up to $1,000,000 to two organizations that, like Nissan, help people build better lives for themselves and their families - Habitat for Humanity® and Wounded Warrior Project®. We are proud to be their partner.
