Lovers Wendi Adelson and Dan Markel, on the eve of their 2006 wedding

By Nicholas Stix

Apparently, what happened was that Dan Markel’s killer knocked on his front door, at around 11 a.m. Friday morning. Markel opened the door, and the perp shot him. A neighbor heard the loud bang, and called the Tallahassee PD, which found the wounded vic, who was transported to the hospital, where he died at 1 a.m. Saturday.

The Tallahassee Democrat says that TPD spokeswoman Tenitris McInnis refused to give any details. Everything that has been published has come from a blog, that was either written by, or came from Markel’s friend, Allen Grossman.

Dan Markel was a professor of criminal and civil law at Florida State University in Tallahassee since 2005, and was survived by his wife of eight years, Wendi Adelson, and sons Lincoln and Benjamin, 3 and 5, respectively (I’m not sure about the order).

P.S. 7:39 a.m. A funeral service is being held for Dan Markel today at noon.

  3. I'm not sure why the color of the victim's skin makes any difference whatsoever.

  4. Dear cushlander and Anonymous,

I searched repeatedly under his name and “divorce,” but never got any corroboration. The newest report, which I re-posted at 10:34 p.m. last night, said that he and his wife were going through a divorce at the time of his murder. If you’re sure they had already divorced, I’d appreciate your directing me to a corroborating link, or your sending me your phone number at Add1dda@aol.com , so I can call you and you can tell me your connection to the couple.

    Thanks in advance.

  5. Anon Coward,

It makes a great difference to everybody else in the world, and to me, but you are apparently the one person in the world to whom it makes no difference whatsoever.

If you are really completely indifferent to race, as you say, then you are opposed to all Civil Rights Acts, the Voting Rights Act, the Fair Housing Act, hate crimes statutes, affirmative action, to all awards designated for blacks, “African Americans,” etc., Black History Month, and do not care one bit that Martin Luther King was black.

I take back what I said at the top. It makes a great difference to you, too. Are you befouling my comments section with lies?

  6. Why would I tell you my connection to anyone involved in this case. They were separated, going through/done with a divorce, and had shared custody of the kids. That's why the wife and kids were not at the house. Stop being a bigot and think for a few minutes. Do some more searches. Divorce is finally showing up in the articles -- just like I told you yesterday. Bigotry is blinding and stubborn.

  7. Nicholas - why would someone who doesn't think about race oppose the Civil Rights Act? The act bans racial discrimination. Whites have a race. Whites have won civil rights cases brought under that very statute. You are really unqualified to discuss law or even race! That Dr. King was black was absolutely important for the historical period in which he lived. But you probably are not a fan of the liberal arts either. So, a history major - I doubt you are. Did you even go to college?

  9. "New York University law professor Rick Hills, Jr., last saw Markel when the Florida resident stayed with him in New York just two weeks ago.
Markel had not told many of his friends yet, but he told Hills that he was happy in a new relationship with a woman after going through a divorce with the mother of his children in the past two years, Hills said."

  10. I really hope this wasn't a hit on him. I really hope his ex-wife didn't hire a hit man. For some reason, the report that Wendi was "devastated and really scared..." made me nauseous. I have no idea why. I just have a sinking feeling that she wasn't happy about the child custody dispute and maybe that Dan had moved on, had a new girlfriend even though she filed for divorce, and was really pissed off? I know this is huge conjecture and I have no facts to base it on, but without there being a robbery and no forced entry, if it's not some student (ex student) who is mad, it would point to Wendi pretty fast. Wouldn't it? I hope I'm wrong and she continues to comply with authorities. Once she hires her own lawyer, if that happens, then it's all downhill from there.
