Re-posted by Nicholas Stix

Thanks to reader-researcher “W,” who writes,
The headline should have read, “Only” 9 shot overnight. Of course, this was just the prelude to Mother’s Day in Chicago. We will have to check back tomorrow…. I didn’t find reports of shootings in Lake Forest, where I grew up. There must not be enough Diversity….

Overnight shootings across the city left at least eight people wounded, including a 15-year-old boy, in addition to a man shot to death by police, authorities said.

The 15-year-old, the youngest person shot overnight, was injured in a shooting about 11:45 p.m. in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, near the intersection of South Dorchester Avenue and East 75th Street, police said. The boy was struck under the armpit and was in fair condition at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County this morning.

Killed this morning was a 37-year-old man, shot multiple times by police early this morning in the West Side's South Austin neighborhood.

A spokesman for the police union said the man was shot after a brief foot chase in the 5400 block of West Madison Street in the South Austin neighborhood when he turned toward an officer with a semiautomatic handgun. Witnesses [neighborhood criminals] at the scene expressed anger over the shooting, saying they did not believe the man had been armed and that he had already been brought to the ground when the officer fired. The man was in serious condition at Loyola University Medical Center.

The most recent shooting happened about 4:30 a.m., when a 34-year-old woman was shot in the 200 block of West Garfield Boulevard on the South Side. Police said the woman was shot in the lower left side as she walked out of a business and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

In other overnight shootings:

• About 3:30 a.m. a 25-year-old was shot in the 3600 block of North Ashland Avenue, in the North Side's Lakeview neighborhood. The man was standing in line outside a nightclub when someone began shooting from across the street, hitting him in the eye, police said. The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.

• About 2 a.m., a 27-year-old woman was shot in the arm in the 12200 block of South Halsted Street in the West Pullman neighborhood. Police said she was standing in a parking lot when someone she didn't recognize started shooting, hitting her in the arm. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where her condition was stabilized.

• About 1:40 a.m., a 21-year-old man was shot in the hip in the 1700 block of West 85th Street in the Gresham neighborhood, police said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition.

• About 1:30 a.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in the ankle in the 9800 block of South Halsted Street in the Longwood Manor neighborhood, police said. The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where his condition had stabilized.
