Back during the 1990s, I knew a guy who was a taxi driver and a writer. That was once a common breed, back when most cabbies were white. He used to write about driving and race, which caused the occasional explosion, particularly among eternally outraged black male letter writers. I’m not mentioning him by name, because I don’t want him to get the Frank Borzellieri treatment.
Joe, as I’ll call him, noted that taxi drivers don’t like to pick up black men, but not just for the obvious reason, that virtually all robberies and murders of hacks in New York are committed by black men, but because, additionally: 1. Black men virtually never tip; and 2. They frequently skip out without paying their fare, to begin with.
The most notorious case of a black man skipping out on his fare was about ten years ago, when former Mets great Dwight “Doc” Gooden refused to pay his taxi fare in Florida, and then beat up the driver, when the latter knocked on the former’s hotel room door, and sought to collect.

Allen was charged with theft of service and assault. A MTA spokesman did not return a request to comment on whether Allen’s job was in jeopardy due to the meltdown [translation: alleged crime; there was no meltdown].
Jamelel. Has to be a black man. Pure, plain and simple as that.
ReplyDelete"why he lost his cool". Probably drunk, high and drugs, a combination of both maybe, just did not want to pay, wanted to have some fun punching someone out, etc.
ReplyDeleteIt isn't just the whitey cab drivers that did not pick up negro men, negro cab drivers too refused to pick them up. The negro cab driver knows better than most what was going on.
