“Aspiring Rapper” Rashad Charjuan Owens Now Guilty of Mass Murder in Austin: Sandy Thuy Le, 26, Succumbs to Her Wounds
By Nicholas Stix
A Texas Reader asks:
Does this constitute mass murder? Much less a hate crime?
N.S.: It counts as both in my book. However, other criminologists consider nothing less than four murders at a time “mass murder.” As for a “hate crime,” I know TR was asking a rhetorical question, because Owens was the “wrong” sort of murderer, and murdered the “wrong” sort of victims, the kind that don’t count.

A third person has died as a result of last week’s crash at South by Southwest involving an alleged drunk driver, according to Austin police.
Sandy Thuy Le, 26, died at University Medical Center Brackenridge. Her family was present, according to a Seton Healthcare spokesman.
Le, a Mississippi native [by way of South Vietnam, at least her parents], had apparently moved to Austin with the intention of going to school there. She’s been at University Medical Center Brackenridge in critical condition since early Thursday, when police allege 21-year-old Killeen resident Rashad Charjuan Owens, drunk and evading arrest, intentionally steered toward pedestrians standing in front of The Mohwak.
Two others were pronounced dead Thursday: Jamie West, a 27-year-old from Austin, and Steven Craenmehr, a 35-year-old musician from the Netherlands. Her brother-in-law told The Clarion-Ledger that the family had been “pulling for a miracle.” He says that “now we’re starting the business side of things, the funeral and the logistics. The fact that the healing process has been delayed has made it tough.”
Owens has been charged with one count of capital murder and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle. His bond has been set at $3 million. It’s likely those charges will change in coming days.
Austin police spokesperson Veneza Bremner tells The Dallas Morning News that “at this point the whole case will go to the Travis County District Attorney’s Office at a later date to determine if other charges will be filed.”
Five victims are still hospitalized at UMC Brackenridge. One victim, DeAndre Tatum of Fort Worth, remains in critical condition, the Seton spokesman said.
Staff writer David Barer in Austin contributed to this report.
Thank you for posting photos of Owens' victims. I hadn't seen them until now.
ReplyDeleteI might have already said this, so please forgive me if I'm repeating myself. But there sure doesn't seem to be much remorse or shame on Owens' face.
so many beautiful intelligent minds destroyed by ignorance and filth.
