Crime, courts and legal issues in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin
[Racist black] Community groups have begun to speak out against the decision by prosecutors not to file charges in the death more than a year ago of a West Allis teen who was restrained by [white] customers at a convenience store where he had tried to shoplift alcohol.
"Like the murder of Trayvon Martin, this is the continuation of an unjust and shameful system of criminal injustice which regards black lives as more threatening and less valuable than white lives," said Mike Wilder, co-director of the African American Roundtable, in a statement released Tuesday.
The statement said the roundtable was "saddened" by District Attorney John Chisholm's announcement late Friday that no charges could be sustained against three white customers who grabbed and restrained Corey Stingley at VJ's Food Mart on Dec. 14, 2012.
After a long investigation that included a John Doe hearing, Chisholm concluded that customers had no intent to harm Stingley, 16, when they restrained him, nor was there sufficient evidence that any one of the three was aware that their actions created a substantial and unreasonable risk of great bodily harm.
The three men held Stingley down until police arrived a few minutes later. He died of asphyxiation.
"They had no business forcefully restraining him," said Rosalynn Wolfe, co-director of the Roundtable. "They should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There is a family that no longer has their child, and unfortunately no longer has hope that there will be any justice served as a result of his senseless death."
Another group has planned a news conference at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Center Street Library, 2727 W. Fond du Lac Ave, and is planning a demonstration against Chisholm from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday outside the Safety Building, 821 W. State St.
"We are appalled that D.A. Chisholm decided not to charge these three [white] men with any crime even though witnesses testified that they saw these men choke Corey Stingley to death," read the statement from the rally organizers.
"These men are not 'good Samaritans,' these men were a self-appointed, out-of-control posse that killed a black boy!"
The announcement ends with a reference to the Trayvon Martin case: "WE WILL NOT LET YOU TREAT OUR BLACK [MALE CRIMINALS] BOYS LIKE FLORIDA DOES!"
Wilder said the African-American Roundtable is not involved in planning the news conference or Friday's protest, but it does plan to have members attend and would actively support any efforts to have federal authorities review the case.
Chisholm said Tuesday that his office would fully cooperate in any such federal review.
This is a case for Eric "my people" Holder.
ReplyDeleteCheers to District Attorney Chisholm for upholding the rights to self defense and defense of one's property. Well-done. Hopefully there remain enough decent citizens in Wisconsin such that you withstand scrutiny.
