I seem to recall an openly racist, black male South African player pulling a similar stunt against us in the 2010 South African vuvuzela World Cup, and being protected by racist, black soccer officials.

Abby Wambach Hit By Lady Andrade During U.S. Women's Soccer Match Against Colombia (VIDEO)

The U.S. women's soccer team walked away from its second match of the London Olympics with three more points (and six total) in the group stage and one black eye. That's because in the 39th minute, Colombia's Lady Andrade socked U.S. star Abby Wambach in the face.

The two were jostling for position as they ran down the ball. Andrade dropped Wambach, who began writhing in pain once she hit the turf in Glasgow. As play continued, no call came from the officials.

The reigning AP Female Athlete of the Year didn't stay down, though. In the 74th minute, Wambach scored her sixth career goal in the Olympics to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead. With that goal, Wambach broke the U.S. women's soccer record for most career goals at the Olympics.

But that wasn't the topic of conversation after the match. Instead, Wambach threw in her two cents on the hit. [Her two cents? That is completely improper usage. One throws in one’s “two cents” about the weather or the stock market, not about getting slugged.]

"It was a really terrible play," she said. "Dangerous and unsportsmanlike. I hope that FIFA will look at the play and decide if this is the kind of player they want in the Olympics."

Wambach also told reporters that Andrade kept taunting her in the second half and even tried to hit her in the face again.

For her part, Andrade didn't seem to be overly concerned with what transpired on the field, saying through an interpreter that "that's the way things happen in football." [Why would the attacker, who got off scot-free, “be overly concerned”? Besides, nothing "transpired" on the field; she did something on the field.]

  1. Whenever I see something like this I flash on a controversy from a few years back. Anyone remember when someone determined that NBA refs call more fouls on black players? This "study" was actually debunked but the public perception that NBA refs were favoring white players was imprinted on peoples minds.
That whole controversy helped the PC agenda to encourage and excuse black violence on the basketball court. Anyone who watches the NBA notices that black players have a monopoly on sucker punches (usually directed against white players) and racially motivated attacks are exclusively instigated by black players.
As a long time basketball player my experience when playing against black players is that pushing, shoving, cheap shots and especially high deliberate elbows goes way up. My nose was broken by one of those high deliberate elbows playing against a black guy who only seemed to use them when faced with a white guy. Anecdotal but anyone who plays hoops knows what I'm talking about, even if they won't admit it.
I've got a shocking suggestion that was never mentioned by anyone during this "controversy": Maybe (gasp) NBA refs called more fouls against black players because they FOUL MORE! Maybe when black guys see a white face in front of them they get a little more physical, a little more "violent". My own experience suggests that it's true and personal observation affirms it. So now refs have to ratchet back calls against black players to keep from being perceived as racist. Now this type of racism is permeating the Olympics. Aren't the Olympics supposed to be pinnacle of competitive purity? Debatable ideal considering the commodification of the event but it's obvious black violence is going to be excused and/or ignored just the way it is in the NBA. Jerry

Disclaimer: I'm not sure if if Lady Andrade even has any African heritage, pictures I've seen of her and being Columbian she is likely a mix of different races but since Abby Wambach is clearly white and Andrade is "ambiguously ethnic" i.e. darker than Wambach, I believe judges and refs automatically had their racial biases triggered by the incident.

  2. Lady Andrade gets Olympic ban after punching Abby Wambach in the face

  3. Yes, she was banned a whopping two games. Voula Papachristou and Michel Morganella were expelled from the Olympics for what were perceived to be racist tweets. Let's see: Violent assault = two games ban. Hurtful words = expelled from games
The "hurtful words" may have been meant to be satirical but when you are white you're not getting any benefit of the doubt.
Lady Andrade actually had the nerve to say it wasn't a punch but "accidental", watch the video and it was a clear sucker punch with intent to hurt. Maybe they should tack on some extra punishment for lying.
