Police quickly arrested a robbery suspect in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood based on the victim’s description of the man, who appeared in court Sunday dressed as a woman.
Jamell Armstrong, 19, is charged with robbery in the attack about 6 a.m. Saturday in the 3300 block of North Broadway.
On Sunday, he appeared in court wearing revealing shorts, a tank top with a bra and a long brown wig. Cook County Judge Israel Desierto ordered him held on $75,000 bond.
After pepper spraying the 30-year-old man in the eyes, Armstrong tried to grab his iPhone and the two struggled, according to a police report. Armstrong of the 100 block of North Karlov Avenue grabbed the strap of a gym bag around the man’s shoulder, pulled him to the ground and grabbed the phone, authorities said.
The man called 911, and police nabbed Armstrong in an alley about half a mile away in the 3400 block of North Sheffield Avenue, according to the police report. Officers found the iPhone about 15 feet away, authorities said.

Strange as it may seem, cross-dressing muggers have become a regular thing in this city. The method of operation is similar to that described in the story. They lurk in the gay neighborhood and then fan out to nail vulnerable victims. Being black overrides all else, I suppose.
