Police say a furniture supply store owner in Old East Dallas shot a man trying to rob his business this afternoon.

The robber showed up at the business in the 4300 block of Ross Avenue about 2 p.m., police said, and struck the owner in the head with a two-pound barbell weight [police said barbell, but a commenter points out it was probably a dumbbell - A.S.]. The owner grabbed his gun out of his fanny pack and shot his assailant once in the stomach. After witnesses flagged down police, both men were taken to the hospital -- the business owner in good condition, the suspect seriously wounded and needing surgery.

Neither has been identified.
